Real ale and birds names. (1 Viewer)

Out of "A Devonian's Tale of Two Gulls" thread comes an idea. How many real or cask conditioned ales can we think of named after birds? If we get desparate, we can include fizzy ones also.
Just to start us off: "Gannet Mild" from the Earl Soham Brewery in Suffolk, which I sampled enroute to a weekends birding from Minsmere northwards to Stubb Mill a few years ago.
No cheating, put the "Good Beer Guide" away!

Sounds interesting! Just realised that this thread may be in the wrong category. If so, please feel free to move it!

Cant think of any names but on a recent birding trip to Barra I sampled some excellent bottled beers including Arran Blonde and Caledonian's organic beer Golden Promise sooooooooooooooooperb !!

Old Speckled Hen..is that not a well known one?I don't get to many ale houses of late so don't know any others.

Cotleigh Brewery (Wiveliscombe, Somerset) : Barn Owl, Buzzard, Golden Eagle & Kookaburra. (Unsurprisingly, their 'Tawny' eludes me!)

Coniston Brewing Company (Coniston, Cumbria) : Bluebird Bitter.

Morland (Greene King) (Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk) : Hen's Tooth & Old Speckled Hen.

Wychwood Brewery (Witney, Oxfordshire) : Osprey.

Jennings Brwery (Cockermouth, Cumbria) : Redbreast.

It may not qualify but Marston's Oyster Stout has a picture of an Oystercatcher in flight.

Drat !! should have got that as that was one of the aforementioned beers downed with relish.

Black Isle Brewery do "Red Kite And " Yellowhammer" they are obviously from the Black Isle in the Highlands of Scotland and i can personally recommend both!!!!! It is also Organic!!!!

They have a website as well if you type Black Isle Brewery into Google you are sure to find it.

I also remember drinking a couple of pints off "Nutcracker once which is also excellent but i cant remember the Breweries name sorry- to much real ale drunk since then!!!!

Cheers B :)

Sylvia

Nutcracker was brewed by Hanby in Shropshire. A good start, lets see what else we can find.

Some names I made up for my own homebrew;

Rubythroat; for when there's something to celebrate.

Bluethroat; when you've just dipped.

Yellowhammered; too much lager.

Nightjar; a late night tipple B :)

now you have the bird you ought to get the beer! They had it on tap at the Hood Arms in Kilve (curiously the pub sign is three choughs) in October.

Cotleigh also do a Preimum Ale - Buzzard and a Dark Ale - Barn Owl

Where's Kilve?

Back to the thread (for me), I went to a Scottish real ale festival in a pub between the centre of Edinburgh and Lasswade in Feb. 2003, and one of the beers that I sampled was called Hoodie Craw. I don't remember which brewery it was from.

In addition to Black Isle Yellowhammer, O'Hanlons in Devon brew their own Yellowhammer, sometimes available in Safeways/ Morrisons (not real ale then ,though).

Hi there.

I used to live in Devon and there was a great cider on sale a few years back, don't know if it is still going. It was called "CRIPPLE COCK" Farmhouse Scrumpy and was sold in 50cl earthernware flagons and had a picture of a cockerel on crutches on the front with the words "HAVE YER CRUTCHES HANDY, THIS BE A REAL TOE CURLER"..... and it was.

Regards from Doñana.

John.

think I've tasted Ptarmigan ... seem to remember a pint called Wryneck in Devon ... Cripple Cock reminds me of Earth Stopper, one pint would age you 20 years!
