This picture was taken by my daughter of what looks like a hybrid tern, though a little on the heavy side. Any ideas please?

Tony.

It looks very much like a zoo or collection of some sort, as the Avocets are all ringed too. They are not BTO style rings either. Maybe the slides got mixed up?!

Definitaly an Inca tern as said before; a bird from the west coast of South America. It is also kept in some zoos or bird collections (Vogelpark Walsrode in Germany had them for years, don´t know if still).
As the thin coloured plastic rings on all avocets (breeders rings) in the photo indicate, I am sure this must have been in a Zoo or Aviary of some sort?

I first saw Inca Tern in London's Snowdon Aviary though I don't know if they still have any. More recently I've seen them at Bristol Zoo, so there seem to be a few knocking around in collections.

Was this picture taken in Paignton Zoo, in Devon, I can remember seeing an enclosure there with both the species depicted together two or three years ago?

There's a collection of marine and coastal animals at torquay harbour now ('living seas' or somesuch). Maybe that's where the photo is from.
