Painted Lady migration (1 Viewer)

Thats a terrific local patch species list Jos!.Any Nymphalidae species of note on your local patch?

Depends what 'of note' means ;)

Some of the best in this family this year included the below: abundant Purple Emperor (Lesser Emperor rare, not seen this year), Poplar Emperor, reasonably common White Admiral, moderately common Camberwell Beauty (one below photographed yesterday as he perched upon my finger!), plus 13 species of fritillary.

My July sightings are here

A soon to be updated full list of local patch stuff here

Sorry Jos i should have more specific but you have answered my question with some of those stunning images. Thanks for posting those.

Dave.

I can't beat those species but I have loaded a video of some Painted Lady and other butterflies on Birdforum TV on some waste ground in Northampton this morning.

I.D. needed on the hoverfly/bee if anyone can help please.

13 species of Fritillary - that's pretty impressive stuff!

Probably worth summarising as people probably get fed up with opening links all the time - that the above links refer to the fact that they reckon there could be a billion painted lady butterflies emerging in the uk in the next few weeks....

Had 1 of them in the garden today - a fresh looking one (but on the small side compared to the spring ones??) on the path outside the front door. Garden butterfly list now up to 3 I think.

I had 8 in the garden this morning ,and they did look smaller than ones earlier in the year, and oddlly I had only one while out most of the day.

Brian[/QUOTE]The Painted Ladies which i have seen in the last few days the size of them have varied from small to large ones and nearly all of them have been in perfect condition.

Counted 61 Painted Ladies today at Marsden Quarry,South Tyneside and 18 in the garden. There was 29 in the garden yesterday.

Counted 12 or more in 45 minutes at lunchtime today while out wandering around a wilder part of our base here on the River Clyde at Greenock. Very fresh looking beasties and all quite large.

Here's a pic of one.

Large numbers along the Pembrokeshire coastal path to the east of Strumble Head yesterday (6th August) and also, large numbers of Whites, mostly Large Whites passing Strumble Head observatory.

At the "Rose Bowl" (Southampton area) today (watching Hants vs Lancs) and counted 30 P/L in the space of an hour ... no, the cricket wasn't THAT boring!

Plenty of Painted ladies around the Leighton moss area last week with at least 15 on the path towards Lillians hide and another dozen around the reserve.Arnside knott had a couple of individuals and a buddleia near Gait barrows had 10 individuals.

Dave.

I've seen some variation in size with the recent brood of Painted Ladies but one on the coast on Sunday was extraordinarily small. The photos below show it in comparison with a (relatively small) Peacock as well as with the Ragwort flowers it was feeding on.
