Nottinghamshire Birding (1 Viewer)

If I have asked the wrong question in the wrong place then I apologise. I appreciate the security of the birds is paramount and would not wish to do anything to jeopardise their safety.

Having said that, my intention was not to advertise sites but merely for a little guidance in seeing the species. I don't really see why it is necessary to outline that questions such as mine are "frowned upon" in other threads.

I don't think Ben was saying you asking the question is frowned upon, more that those giving out the information are frowned upon - especially on a public forum. That said its hardly a well kept secret!

A quick search of the the Nottinghamshire forum for Woodlark would be a good place to start as I'm sure this info has been requested a number of times before.

As Chris said, it's not the asking for info that's frowned upon so much as the responses that identify locations. I was merely pointing this out as many people are not aware of the problem. Once you post something that someone else replies to by quoting your post, you're no longer in control of that info - you cannot edit their reply to remove the information you've disclosed.

Wood Lark locations, as Ben suggests are a poorly kept secret and though they are a schedule 1 breeding bird and still rare, in context in the county, are probably not in the very highest tier, of rare breeding birds; such as Goshawk and Honey-buzzard for example. I have therefore taken a practical and realistic approach to the disemination of data via the annual reports, although of course many sites remain secret. I do agree though that divulging locations on a forum still wrankles a little. That's just a personal view though.

A little Egret on Bennerley Marsh at lunchtime was reported to me today. Didn't get home from work til after dark but I'll check in the morning.

If you don't mind venturing half a mile over the border I know where there are Woodlarks in summer. PM me if you want to know. (Bawtry area)

Went to Welbeck Raptor Viewpoint yesterday. Dozens of Buzzards and just a few seconds fleeting glimpse of a Goshawk display. Nuthatches and a Marsh Tit at the feeding fence. Weather was a bit cold and breezy, not many thermals. No sign of the reported Kite though. I will be going back though shortly as this was my first time there and it looks full of promise.

Nice - went for the Osprey back in 2008, which was a first for me at the time. Also had Spotted Flycatcher at the memorial pull-in.

Welbeck Raptor point today. Took an hour an a half but eventually a Goshawk showed it's self. It took a dislike to 3 Buzzards which were flying too close to it's territory and saw them off. Also had a Peregrine and a Sprawk, a Treecreeper and Yellowhammers on the nearby tree. Also heard 2 separate Tawny Owls. Plenty of Goosander still on the lakes. Down at the feeding point were Marsh Tits and Nuthatch along with Coal Tit's and the usual suspects. Great Spotted Woodpecker flew past here too. Not much to speak of at Budby pumping station but heard a couple of Chiffchaffs here and also in Cuckney village.

Woodlark

Morning all,

Just wondered if anyone could provide a bit of advice on seeing Woodlark. After a bit of reading it seems the South Lawns area of Clumber would give me a good chance. I am presuming the birds would be easier to see when singing earlyier in the season? If this is true, what would be the best time to try for them? Any help much appreciated!

I saw one last week in the field across the road from where the Great Grey Shrike normally sits in Clumber Park.

Was watching a pair of Buzzards from home over the woodland at Bestwood today, when I picked up a large whiter bird soaring much higher up... I was hopefully until it came closer and saw two others with it - three large gulls drifting S.

I was there yesterday. Didn't get Osprey but did see a Goshawk displaying, loads of Buzzards, 4 Swallows, a few flocks of Sand Martins, and a Sparrowhawk.

Ok no mention of any breeding birds I saw today but at Welbeck I saw my first Hobby of the year, chasing a flock of Sand Martins.
No Osprey though.

:t:

I'm still yet to catch up with a definite Hobby - one problem with sticking to my local patch! I think they are typically only seen once every two years here, so it's a case of right place, right time. When we went for the Osprey at Welbeck a few years back we did have a probable Hobby through in front of the car whilst on the main road, but it was the briefest of views.
