not sure about Yorkshire border Gary!

all these are good:
Snettisham
Holme
Titchwell
Thornham
Stiffkey
Blakeney
Cley
Salthouse
Sea Palling - Yarmouth Coast
Breydon Water
Strumpshaw

Look on the birdgiudes birdnews norfolk page for maps and direction
you can camp cheaply at Stiffkey, Holme, Burnam Deepdale, Weybourne etc

Where to start? The whole county is brilliant at any time of year. We could all narrow it down for you if you maybe have a few target species...? If not then anywhere between Snettisham-Sheringham is fantastic for a general visit. Snettisham RSPB, Holme, Titchwell RSPB, Holkham, Blakeney Point, Cley NWT are all on that stretch of North Norfolk Coast.

Not too sure you will find much close to the Yorkshire border, mate, as there is a big bit of land called Lincolnshire / Nottinghamshire between ;-)

Do you camp? If so the campsite at Stiffkey is great and close to all the good places - very cheap and a great pub at the end of the lane. There is another one at Wells, but this is a bit more family orientated (play areas, loads of screaming kids etc...) - if you are taking a family brilliant, if not then take ear plugs and wear your tolerance cap!

For a nice stay try the Three Swallows in Cley/Wiverton. Fabulous B+B (not too expensive about £25) and a resident Barn Owl on the nearby river that shows every night and usually hunts the flooded fields whilst you eat your breakfast.

Have fun (it's impossible not to), Tom.

Red Lion in Stiffkey Village
good for a pint after a day's birding

should be lots of waders at Cley and Titchwell
Any spot like Holme, Waxham, Blakeney could be good for migrants if weather is right

And they say us Southener's are geographically challenged!!

Gary - the advice you've got is better than anything I could give.

Gary,

Is it your first visit to Norfolk? If so then do the famous places thoroughly. So concentrate on fully covering Cley NWT, Titchwell RSPB and maybe Snettisham RSPB or Holkham Freshmarsh. By fully covering I mean take advantage of every bit of habitat and don't just do the hide circuits. There is some great wood/scrub and seawatching to be done alongside the waders and marshy birds.

Norfolk is somewhere you will keep going back to (I've already been 8 times this year) so don't cram too much in. Those places I mentioned are vast enough and have enough birds to easily occupy 2 or 3 days. If you are going for longer then maybe try and slot some other places in.

Hey Tom - you might like it that much you end up moving here! Great birding community in Norwich......

I'd second what Tom said and also add that you might get a bit of reward searching coastal scrub for migrants - and a bit of peace and quiet too - Titchwell can be busy -best early morning

nice cafe at Holkham too
good Indian in Holt
plus Wildsounds in Salthouse have good book deals - arrange via their website if u want to go in person though.

Gary, just got in from Norfolk,2 Honey Buzzards at Grt Ryburgh, hobby, common buzzards,Sparrowhawk,Marsh Harrier.Titchwell heaving with birds, lots of people, but they dont detract from the birding.Your birding will be dependent on the weather which is setpretty settled at the time, plenty of movement of Waders, dont waste your time seawatching when it is calm,Common Scoter,Sandwich terns and Sanderling.most passerines now are quite,so a nice quite spot for Reed Warblers and Beardies. Most pubs along the coast are good value, just avoid some of the preppy and ya hoo places.Norfolk iis filling up a bit now with holiday trade well on the way,so accomadation maybe a little tight. You can work the coast from Hunstanton to Horsey masses of great birding areas, and if you drop into Titchwell you may well pick up info on birds along the coast.where we live only two hors to norfolk,we pratically live down here.Magic little pub in Upper Sheringham best food on the coast.North Norfolk is the birders crown jewels and you dont pay an entrance fee have a great time.

John

Hi there Gary, I can't add anything to what's been said .... loads of places & you can't really go wrong at that time of year.

Cheapest places to stay are the campsites, I haven't been to it for ages now but seem to remember the one at Stiffkey (forgot the name) is on the site of an old WW2 military base and still has the original toliet blocks... sorry .. totally irrelevant point, i know ... but it has a good view across the marshes.

Cheers

Hey Gary,
We've been to Norfolk twice this year (Feb & May)
I called it 'Easy Birding'
Very Enjoyable
Local birders allways friendly & helpfull, bird reserves & hides everywhere.
There's always loads of people about to put you 'onto' the birds or pass on the latest bird news.
The info you get from this site is spot-on.

What i tend to do is start a thread away, about a fortnight before you intend to visit, in order to get the most up to date info.

As regards the boundary question.
Thats any easy mistake to make as most times ive been to Norfolk birding its been full of loud mouth Yorkshire folk.
They allways seem to dominate the hides even if theyre talking bolk's.
Ive also noticed that they have an ability to make waders metamorphasise into whichever species they need them to be for the duration of their visit. ;)

Have a great trip.

Right thats it Stevie the honour and integrity of us QUIET Yorkshire folk is at stake.I propose pistols at dawn Titchwell beach September 5th,I'll be down there for a week then. :C

A little secret: I have never been to Norfolk [blush]. I have always wanted to but never quite made it, as there have always been other things that have required my more immediate attention...
