Norfolk birding (96 Viewers)

The Yellow-browed Warbler was showing well in The Plantation at Blakeney Point. Also had a Short-eared Owl by Halfway House. Lots of Redwings, Blackbirds and Song Thrushes flying overhead.

Full update on blog.

Hi everybody

I am pretty sure a while ago someone on this thread created a photo of the new Parinder hide at Titchwell with an aeroplane just over it -possibly due to it's similarity to a airport terminal. I would really like to find this again to drop into a powerpoint presentation.

Please can anyone remember where it is. ?

many thanks

Richard

Gosh, yes, that was me with my warped sense of humour! What fun it was to do, I'll see if I can find it again...

Hi

I searched in vain for over an hour for the PGP amongst the very large flock of goldies at Breydon Water today.
I believe the bird is a moulting adult, there were a few birds with dark bellies in the flock but they all seemed too dumpy to be anything other than ordinary golides.
Just wondering if there are photos anywhere of the bird?
Also wondering, for Norfolk, is Pacific commoner than AGP?

Thanks

Graham Clarke

Not an awful lot at Cley this pm. I had a Grey phalarope West at around 2pm the first I have found myself. A couple of divers were offshore, 2 pegs from the north hide and 2 red kite on the way home.

Hi,
Had a grey phalarope off Cley beach car park on Friday. It was distant and on the water. Tricky to refind so pleased someone else got it. Otherwise, friday was very quiet.

Glandford Black Redstart

Sup Players,

Having seen the Glandford Black Redstart yesterday, the bird does seem to be showing atypical plumage characteristics. Namely, the bleeding of orangey-red from the vent onto the lower belly and flanks.

Martin Garner has blogged about these 'western' Black Redstarts showing atypical plumage and from an image search I can only find one other bird that Garner had not documented showing this 'bleeding', from Portland Bill.

There isn't much of a conclusion to these birds from what I have read, maybe just the fact that ssp gibraltariensis is variable and may show 'eastern' features.

Interesting bird and subject nonetheless, so thought I would share.

WeBS wonder

I found this bird during my WeBS count of the Eye field at Cley. It made me think for a while then I realised it's an Australian Wood Duck. Now it was wary and some must have been displaced by the recent fires but I think it will be hard to get this past the recorder .... ;)

Banham Zoo keeps these, securely I hope.

Sorry for the self promotion ;)

But we had a couple of interesting days staying at the Le Strange arms in Hunstanton. The vis mig from dawn yesterday was brilliant, just standing on the lawn we had c2000 chaffinches over in continuous flocks of up to 50 birds, a few Redpoll, Grey Wagtail, lots of Starlings, lesser numbers of Linnet, Mipits, Skylark etc. Also Black Redstart on the hotel roof and Slav Grebe and 2 Velvet Scoter on the sea. (Chris Mills had c4,500 chaffinches over the cliffs, breakfast got in the way of our count!)

Today we were treated to a proper spectacle at Snettisham, courtesy of the Peregrines! See attached (rubbish)shots + another Grey Wagtail flew south.
Later at Titchwell lovely close up views of 2 Great Northern Divers (see record shot), a rather showey grey plover and a nice close up flight view of the Bittern.

Yellow-browed performing very well and quite vocal at Natural Surroundings. (but you have to pay to go into garden) in tree by squirrel cages.
On a brief visit to Cley Spy could not find the Black Redstart, others were there and had not seen it.
