Nikon P5100 or Nikon P6000 (1 Viewer)

I have Swarovski ATS80HD with 20-60 zoom and DCA adapter. Which Nikon will be better for me.
Thank you for your answer. Davy

P6000 has the option of a remote adapter - if you have a steady tripod and no clowns bouncing around shaking the floor of a hide you can get images which are hard to tell from low end DSLRs. I think it is a no brainer but others would say that they can squeeze gently (!)- I've never been convinced.

I have a P5100 and a P5000 which work very well with the Swaro 25-50 eyepiece using the DCA, and I'd expect them to be fine on the 20-60. I've not tried a P6000 though. The P5100 and P5000 do not work with the little Nikon remote - which is a shame as I have one from my D70. However, SRB Griturn make a great adapter that fits into the flash shoe, and allows you to use a cable release. See

Problem will be getting hold of a P5000, P5100 or P6000 - none left in the shops and only a few come up on ebay.

Good luck! Roger

With the zoom eyepieces and the DCA the P5100 works best with minimal vignetting. The P6000 needs a Balance Bar to get the best out of it with zoom eyepieces and the P7000 works best with fixed eyepieces but only very limited range ( wide open ) on a Balance Bar.

P5100 & Swarovski 80hd

I have used the Nikon P5100 with my swarovski 80hd for about 4 years now and its still going well. However I know that the P5100 won't last forever. What is the best replacement camera for this?

Check out my blog to see some of the results this old camera is still getting and let me know what you think

Hi all,

I use the P5100 with a Kowa 883 APO scope. See an example image attached. However, the P5100 works equally well with the Swarovski and sometimes the results I've seen seem better.

The P6000 allows the user to download images in 'RAW' which are bigger and apparently better files. That's about as far as I can go on the technical front! Also note that the P6000 has a manual focus option which can be very handy. My P5100 autofocused on every blade of grass either in front or behind an Oriental Pratincole last year and the manual focus would have been very useful then! I think the P6000 macro focuses to 1cm (rather than 4cm with the P5100). Again the manual focus is useful here as last year my P5100 would not and could not focus on a scarce bluetail damselfly as the damselfly was too small for the camera to lock on to.

For digiscoping I always, always, use the 3 second timer. I then stand back from the camera and let it do the rest.

Bear in mind that a cheap alternative is the P4500 which can be bought off of Ebay for next to nothing. But you'd still need to buy the digiscoping adaptor(s).

Cheers,

Andy.

P5100 and DCA

Roger
I have a P5100 and have recently bought a DCA Adaptor, but none of the fittings fit onto the camera. I thought this would be solved by buying a Nikon UR-E20 step down adaptor which fortunately I obtained cheap on Ebay, fortunately as it didn't solve the problem and I am still left having to hold the camera to the adaptor while trying to focus the scope. What do I need to attach the Adaptor or the UR-E20 to the camera?

Chris,
The UR-E20 from Nikon has a 28 mm thread to the DCA. The DCA normally comes with 52/43/39/28 mm front plates when new. If you bought yours second hand it may not have the 28 mm plate.
You could get the third party 52 mm adapter , such as the one at this site
http://www.photoman.com.hk/goods.php?id=832 ( I have no knowledge of the vendor though but I buy these in HK )
You could buy a 28/52 adapter step up ring.
If you have any problems let me know as I have a spare 28 mm DCA plate I could let you have.
Neil.

The automatic step-up for the P5100 is the P6000 . It has a sharper ED lens, Raw and Remote. Works best with a universal type adapter as you need to move the camera in and out to the eyepiece as you zoom the camera lens to eliminate vignetting. You could use the Vortex PS100 for this
