Nikon Fieldscope EDG85 VR (1 Viewer)

Hio all,

Courtesy from Tee at Nikon Malaysia, I'm currently testing the new Nikon Fieldscope EDG85 VR for the next few weeks :king:

On my brief testing just now, the VR works effectively when turned ON while focusing with no shake at all seen through the viewfinder and same goes with Video mode.

Below is 2 images taken to show some of the results.

EXIF : ISO 100, Shutter speed 1/60s, 500mm F/5.9 with FSA-L2 on D300s. Images were cropped 50% and resized only. No sharpening applied.

1st image with VR ON and 2nd image with VR OFF about 5 metres. Taken using Timer with Cable Release.




I could see the differences of shake during the mirror slap through the viewfinder with both VR ON and OFF. With shutter speed of 1/60s, it was almost impossible to get sharp image with my EDG85 on my previous test.

Then I did tested on Continuous Shots at ISO 200, Shutter Speed 1/160s, VR ON ~ 9 sharp images out of 18 and VR OFF ~ Only 5 sharp images out of 18.

The VR function really helped me in getting accurate focus while panning and focusing at the same time o

White-browed Crake digiscoped late this afternoon.

EXIF : ISO 400, Shutter speed 1/400s, 500mm F/5.9 with FSA-L2 on D7000.

Mike,

I did recorded a video of Common Kingfisher at 1750mm with Nikon D7000 with VR ON. It lasted only for few second before it flew off and I remembered last time when I wanted the extra reach after 750mm for Video with my EDG, it was quite shaky when the wind was blowing.

Now not anymore hahaha :king:

Wind was blowing and the shake was visible through the viewfinder. VR ON, walaaaaaa ! No shake hehehe

Hi Jason,

in the field I wished many times to have some kind of image stabilisation with my scope. Your setup is quite impressive and of cause your photos taken with that VR-scopes are as well. But this is definitely not a lightweight piece of kit. How do you carry that setup in the field?

It was the same with my current EDG85 when I carried the EDG85 VR. I didn't really feel the difference in weight with the VR on the field.

Yesterday I was at the beach looking for the Malaysian Sand Plover and Grey Plover. Wind was blowing quite heavy and that time I wished that I did not return the EDG85 VR back to Nikon Malaysia !

Now I need to save more to replace my EDG 85

This is the setup with Nikon Fieldscope EDG85 VR on Jobu BW Pro gimbal head and Velbon 830 carbon fibre tripod

Estimated weight is around 8 kg !

Impressive set up there Jason!! I like the VR on and VR off pictures, I noticed ants or some kind of insects on the VR on picture.

Just wanted to know how you would use a f of f5.9 when the FSA-L2 has a constant f of f13? I am very interested to know how I could change to f5.9 from f13? Appreciate your help.

With FSA-L2 the EXIF showed constant f13 but actually at 500mm it is f5.9 and when you increased the magnification up to 1750mm, it is at f21.

Check Nikon's website under Digiscoping http://www.nikon.com/products/sportoptics/edg/top/index.htm for more info on the EXIF for FSA-L2 Adapter.

The FSA-L1 adapter for ED series scope is fixed f13.

Suggestions has been given to Nikon Vision about the EXIF for FSA-L2 for accurate EXIF for future products

HI Jason, Thanks for the very useful info. I always thought that My scope was defective coz it showed a constant f13. So how would you change the f in Manual mode and how whould you know what f the picture got taken at on the camera in Aperture priority mode?

As Jason said, the aperture value reported by the camera by either the FSA-L1 or L2 is ALWAYS F13 and that is the value you will see in the EXIF data. It really makes no difference for exposure as metering is always done TTL anyway. This L1/L2 feature is really only of value with D90 or other entry level Nikon dslr's as it allow you to shoot in Aperture Priority mode and adjust Exposure Compensation. With the Nikon prosumer D300 or D7000 you can program the camera for an aperture value of any manual lens.
