New universal camera holder (1 Viewer)

Hello,

This is my first post, so bear with me. I couldn't find where this has been discussed on the Forum before, so I thought I would try to contribute something instead of just lurking around the edges.

I found this new universal camera holder, or adapter(the seller lists is as a camera holder), while surfing the net. It is sold by a company called Olivon Scopes & Optics located in Richmond, British Columbia. The holder (adapter) is a swing away type and clamps to the eye piece. If you go to their web page you can see a film clip showing it in operation. Also scroll down the page and there are additional pictures of the unit. They also list their telephone number.

I spoke to one of their sales persons on Tuesday, January 2, 2007 and found out that they are a new company, but they do have the unit in stock. The only problem from my standpoint is that the threading sleeve that they have for the current unit has an inside diameter of only 50mm. This is too small for my Swarovski 20x60 zoom eye piece. The unit is made in China and was designed for the Kowa and another scope whose name I did not catch from the sales person. The unit weighs 0.8lb (0.36kg). They do not have them in stock, at this time, but the unit also is supposed to have a shutter cable bracket available soon.

Good hunting,

Robert, I have had alook at adapter, I must say it looks intersting. I for one really can't see the necessity of swinging the camera away, others say it's, to be able to focus, but whats the point, you still have to refocus when you return the camera in front of the scope, a bit of overkill for me. I made my first adapter with swing capabilities, but found I rarely used it, so my present one Ive left it off. If I need to just watch the birds I use bino's. Looks a bit exy for me. Ernie

Hello Ernie,
I have seen your adapters. They are a clever answer to the problems faced by all of us who try to match a camera to a spotting scope, neither of which have really been designed for digiscoping. I make this post because I felt that some of the members of the Forum would be interested in this information. I also will state something that I should have made clear in the original post, I have no financial interest in this company. I am not trying to promote camera adapters or one style of digiscoping over another. If something works for you, have at it. I for one need something to hold the camera at the end of the scope and I do not have the skills or tools to make an adapter. As a result, I am always looking for a better one. I will bet there are many more members that are the same way.

Regards,

Robert D.
