Need help with a fledgling Robin (1 Viewer)

Today, when I came hme from work, I found a fledgling Robin on my front porch in the heat. Its about 99 degrees here and it looked like it was suffering. Approaching it to see what it would do (and to get in my front door) it hopped off the step, into my garden and got up close to my house, half way buried in some mint plants.
I watched the bird for almost an hour, no sign of its parents. I checked on this board and found that I could try to give it some water from an eye dropper. I did, and the bird was anxious to take in some water. Not knowing what to do, I only gave it a small amount. I didnt feed it. 1 hour later, I was back in my house and heard a ruckus outside...apparently, mother bird (or father?) was calling it. For the first time, I heard the young one calling back. The parent bird landed on the roof not far from the baby and appeared to swoop down to check it out, although I did not see it feed the young one...

Now, it is 4 hours later, the parent bird has dissappeard for the night, the young bird found its way back onto my porch and is blocking my front door- and still I havent seen it eat. Truth be told, I dont want to adopt this bird, as I am leaving on vacation in 48 hours. I tried to find a rescue in the area, to no avail...called two local vets who told me to "let it be" and it would leave on its own. I know this bird cant fly yet- I also have read enough here to know that its likely the mother will come back to feed it until It can. Apparently, she has located it...however, Im more worried about cats and foxes in the neighborhood. This bird is sitting on ground level on my porch, defenseless and probably hungry! If I took it in, I couldnt be responsible for it and have read where they need to eat practically hourly. Dont get me wrong. Im a bird lover, but am overwhelmed at the responsiblity of trying to find the medium between letting the parents do what they need to do and waking up finding feathers on my front porch....
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to "chance" letting parents do their thing, and suggestions on why this little one wound up on MY front porch? We dont have any trees in the area, however we have plenty of roofs which they land on. I dont know what to do for this tiny creature, and I really cant take the chance of it becoming dependent on ME, as I wont be here to take care of it. This is going to ruin my vacation...and yet, Im praying that it makes it thru the night. Should I be putting it somewhere besides where it is? I dont want it to lose its way.....or its parents.
Help!

update and still need help

Good morning.
I cant believe over 20 people read this, but no one has any advice at all for me?!
The baby bird is still alive and on my front porch..mommy bird woke me up this morning calling for it and it answered, which means what? That she is aware it is there..
So far, I havent seen her feed it..
I know this little one cant fly.
I know that the cats in the neighborhood are now up and ready to prowl around for the day.
I am leaving for work. I cant sit here any longer and worry about this + its my last day before I leave tomororrw for vacation.
Is this bird going to be okay? Or should I move it to higher ground? Or a tree? Somwhere it stands half a chance at being found..
Today is going to be over 100 degrees...will it survive?
Can anyone send any thoughts on this?
Thank you...

Hi birdfinder

I think the best option in all such cases is just to move the chick just up somewhere a little higher out of reach of cats. Even just up in the top of a thick bush would do, and the parents will still be able to find it and feed it. A bush would be better than a tree, as it can scramble round without falling back to the ground.

Hopefully this will work, and good luck!

thank you Mark. I appreciate the answer. At this time, I just stopped home from work, to check on the bird, and its gone...I have to go back and out and scout around to see if it moved on its own, or if there are any signs of it being "taken". I pray not..
Have a nice day.

update and question, please send help

okay, welll the bird is still here. I found it under my holly bush....I have seen the father feeding it since I got home, which is proabably why it is still alive...however, night is about to fall. SHould I let it be, its right on my holly bush, only 2 inches off the ground...or should I do something? My plane leaves at 8 am tomororw- Im not going to be able to enjoy this vacation until I figure out what to do with this bird! I have a house cat, and a cat sitter coming...she wont help me...since the father is around, how long does anyone think before this bird is capable of flying?? It is still hopping from what I can see...thank you.

Hello birdfinder,
I think Mark's advice is spot on. Fledglings often leave the nest before they can fly and the parents continue to feed them. This is a normal part of their life cycle. Here's a BF thread that discusses what to do if you find a baby bird.

Only if there is a real strong threat of a neighbors cat would I consider putting a box or some protection over the bird at night (remember, it is illegal to capture/ keep the bird in the US).

Hope you enjoy your vacation and don't worry too much for this guy - his parents are still in charge and that's how it should be.

Thanks for caring though,

thank you

Thank you for your reply. As of when I left the house a few hours ago, the baby bird was sitting pretty in a bush, sleeping...at this point,I have no choice, Im at the airport, about to board a plane. Whatever will be will be. Its just very unfortunate that he landed near my home at this time, when I had planned to be away...
Mother, or father appear to be checking on him regularly. Sure would like to know how soon this little cutie will be able to take off and fly...as of this morning, he still didnt have capacity to get off the bush by himself and when he tried, he tumbled down..however, he is safe, for now.
Thanks for your input and especially for the link. When I tried to search for something similar to reference on your boards,I didnt bring that up. Its appreciated.
