Mourning Doves on Fire Escape? (1 Viewer)

Hi.

I have absolutely no knowledge of birds as a city dweller but I was hoping to get some advice.

This afternoon I had noticed two mourning doves on my fire escape. They had decided to make a nest out of one of my empty planters and also to put a makeshift nest in front of it. Within the 30 minutes that I was watching them, I was able to open my gate, open my screen and move the other pots they weren't using without them being disturbed. I had rearranged things and closed the window so they would not be disturbed any further from our indoor noise. However 10 minutes later one bird who was standing watch flew away and then 15 minutes later the one sitting on my planter also flew away.

IT is now evening and they are not back. Did I spook them? I would have assumed they would have flown away right away if moving pots and closing my window was bothersome but they kept to themselves. There are no eggs in their nest.

What are the chances of them coming back to this spot to nest? and if they don't what do I do with all of their nesting materials on my fire escape?

Thanks!

Hi citybird and a warm welcome to you from a former New Yorker and on behalf of the entire staff here at BirdForum :t:

It's hard to say if the Doves will be back or if they now consider your fire escape not safe for nesting because of the interference. Sit tight for a few days with no opening of the windows and see what happens. Please keep us posted.
