Hi to all.
What do you think about the stay on case in the image below? Is it helpful in the field? Has it any drawback?

Thank you!

Andrea

Hi Andrea,
Sadly a stay on case only becomes helpful if you drop the scope, otherwise it's just something else (along with, extending and locking the tripod legs, freeing the pan and tilt locks on the head, lining the scope up) that hinders you getting on that dazzling, fleeting, once in a lifetime bird as it burns across the horizon. Also, the case looks quite padded around that focus wheel maybe restricting you to use finger and thumb. I got that hacked off with my stay on case, in the end I slung it and wrapped the scope in camo-tape. I make sure the rubber cap is always on the lens when I'm not viewing, and I made a DIY cover for the eyepiece which I've tethered to the scope's foot. Not everyone's cup of tea of course, but I'm OK with it.

It does make focusing a bit clumsier, and the objective flap is very snug. Overall I find it more practical than the oversized carrying case.

Thank you very much to all!
I have the Meopta S2 and it came with the case, which I never use, for reasons in post 2 above. Helical focussers and SOC's don't mix. The only SOC I ever liked was the tight neoprene one on the old Zeiss Victory 85mm, and that was only useful because the scope body was metal and cold to the touch in winter.

My answer is late...
For my Meopta, I use a SOC Kite for Swaro ATS 80.
The main advantage is that the focuser turns freely. And I can use finger and thumb because there is a "hole" under the SOC.
I believe that the genuine model Meopta (or Swaro !) hampers little the focusing wheel.

So I'm looking into soc's for the s2 as I've just bought that. I'm unsure too a bit to choose between the two-part one in the opening post and the carrying case style. Last one I don't find picture how it is in practice, as in does the whole flap over the thing fold downward? Seems awkward to me. I read fazalmajid above prefers the two part version above the too large carrying case style. Any more opinions?

Main reason for me to use one is for extra protection when transporting in a backpack which is often strapped to bike's luggage carrier. I've had my Nikon ed82 in its soc all the time and didn't find much a fuss, more a comforting extra protective sheath.

Oh wow kinda settles it in this review... https://irelandswildlife.com/meopta-meostar-s2-82-hd-spotting-scope/
So in use the carrying case style is quite impractical, more just a carrying case than a stay-on-case and I don't want to be fumbling about all the time.

The other one does offer extra protection to the eyepiece and lens part, so seems fine. Quick before it's gone everywhere, as is the scope itself... Not available at Meopta anymore....

The stay-on case (your first image) is good, except one detail regarding the objective covers

The standard S2 objective cover is a photographic 77mm lens-type cover that can only be put on if the sunshield is fully down. One can of course buy a larger (95mm) lens-cover to use with the sunshield up (even by a bit). But then you can't put on the objective cover of the stay-on case as there is not enough space.

Otherwise in use, I uncover the eyepiece and keep the objective cover of the stay-on case on using the lower bolt, so that it sort of sticks out from front below, but out of the optical path. Unless there's wind it's okay.

The thread is seven years old, so I assume that andrea86bert has already solved his problem.

When I bought my Meostar 82 S2 in 2021, I ordered the original SOC out of curiosity, but returned it to the dealer straight away: It was a hindrance to me in every way, I felt the protective effect was limited at best and it's also ugly IMHO. So my beautiful Meopta remains ‘naked’ and I use this simple, inexpensive Meopta bag for transport: https://www.optikriesen.ch/media/53/2e/f3/1655461388/Meopta_Standard_Tasche.jpg.

Merry Christmas!
