What are the loudest bird species you've heard when you're trying to sleep at night?

For me, it is the eastern koel and channel-billed cuckoo. The male koel has a repetitive two syllable call, which can just go on and on. And channel-billed cuckoos have a harsh squawking cry which descends into laughing noises. These birds can make it hard to sleep, so I'm generally glad that they're only in Australia during the summer months!

A few years ago I arrived at a campsite on the island of Tiree, which is off the west coast of Scotland, and on hearing a distinctive "Crex Crex" call, said to my husband, "there's a Corncrake, brilliant". It turned out there were 3 around the campsite and their volume increased considerably when it got dark and they didn't shut up all night.

We were there for 2 nights, didn't get any sleep and the worst thing was that we didn't ever catch even a glimpse of one of them.

Stone Curlews can be VERY loud, when only a few feet away and you're trying to sleep.

Years ago four of us young teens were camping on the side of the Eno River in NC way out in the forest. During the night we awoke to the awfulest sounds of very loud growling like noises. It sounded like something was attacking or being attacked.
It wasn't until years later that I heard a 'Blue Heron' making the exact same sounds.

I've actually come to like their low resonant song recently--it's quite a relaxing tune and easy to mimic as birdsongs go.

Same here except I was in Gloucestershire and the offending bird was a quail. Specifically, my first ever quail, which remained firmly heard-only. I wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry. I've still never seen one.
