Lothian Birding (4 Viewers)

This is fine and what I wanted as I cant be arsed chasing around Lothian as I have in previous years for ticks, but felt that as I am getting older and slower I felt that this old bloke should take it easy in life, so I am going for a Lothian 2010 Find List this year, purely out of a matter of interest in how many I can achieve.

OK, fair enough - that is my strategy too - I just copied my list over to "All records" so it can be compared with the rest of the gang. Ignore my previous post, but one group or the other will have to copy lists to the other category or we still won't be able to compare...

select "Create New List" from the left menu and then "Copy from existing list" - then simply add any additional records. Equally folks on the "All records" list can easily make a "Self found" - when you see something new you need to check the box to add to multiple lists, which is pretty straightforward.

I hadn't noticed that you could do that, and it would then help me having to mark the none-self found ones in the main list I have set up. BUT I can't get it to allow to me create a new list from an existing one AND select the list type field. It is greyed out and refusing to play ball......any thoughts? :C

Ignore my dim witted attempt there - I hadn't gone far enough, and my self-found list is on there as well now. Would anyone think I work with computer software for a living......think I need a drink B :)

Havings said that one or two oddities along the way ...

Before I forget, a final oddity - now having the Lothian complete list on, it should have no "targets" but it does in fact have three: two Lesser Canada Goose and one Semi-P listed! Perhaps they were on and now off, or typos, but I shall just mention it here in case of error - not going to chase them down...

Hi Stephen

Tracking those oddities down is comparitively easy - when viewing targets click on the species and it shows you the lists those two species are on.

As it happens I am one of the 'culprits' for the Lesser Canada Goose, with TOC as the other - the species is on the BOU list and I have seen one in Lothian (not the recent one BTW). The fact that this isn't an officially accepted one to me isn't relevant, but at least you know why.

The Semi-P Sand is on Ian Thomson's list - clearly must be a mistake as there hasn't been one in Lothian ever.

Cheers

Mike

I am not a Lothian birder but what has happened to the Birding Lothian website the bird sightings page hasn't been updated since December.I very occasionally visit Aberlady and the other sites on the coast.

If you click on the large purple 'Recent sightings' on the right side of the homepage it goes to December. However if you click on the small grey 'Recent sightings' at the top of the page it takes you to February

Not a mistake M8, as Ian claimed one once, however it was never seen by anybody else and was never submitted by him, so although it never made it onto the Lothian list, it made it on to his.

As far as I am aware Lesser Canada Goose has been split from Canada Goose by the BOU, but there has never been an accepted record in Britain for this species yet, althogh the BBRC Riact commitee are looking at them.

So going by BOU rules it was never included in my list.

Hi

The "lurker" has returned to post on Birdforum.
Finally saw the Firecrest at Gosford Estate yesterday.
Also saw Waxwings in Edinburgh on Wednesday. See the photo.

Welcome back Tony - someone needed to put something on here, I thought we had all gone to sleep!

Had two Waxwings myself briefly at Aberlady yesterday, as well as a few other year ticks though nothing too spectacular. It was just nice to be able to see more than a few feet in front of my face given last weekend.

Given the number perhaps they were the same as the two I saw later in Haddington? These were milling around at council depot at top of Dunbar Road before flying off towards town centre at dusk. Poor pic on blog (along with more of the same on owls and gulls). Was not really expecting to see this species this winter...

They seem to be arriving in small numbers now, which given the massive influx into southern Sweden over the last week or so is not that much of a surprise. Who knows, maybe we might see some more perhaps over the coming weeks?

Sat saw nought, well not strictly true as I did see the Barns Ness Wapit again, lots of Gulls in the fields but nothing with em AGAIN!!

40 Pinkies and 18 Greylags in the field behind the old campsite, but alas no Bean's.

Had a little bit of time so we went to Gosford not for the Firecrest though (although we gave it a milisecond of our time) but for Nuthatch and Tree Creeper both sucessfully noted.

1st w Med Mussi in da gull rooooooooooooooooooooooost

Sunday, was an afternoon looking at gulls at Barnybougleydoo again, 18 Lessers Bl Backs at Cramond with 33 at the aforementioned site, Gull numbers building up here nicely, that is there were a lot more than last week at least.

R.L. Part added to the find list on Sat, although I havent added it up yet, must do this soon.

Gosford this afternoon, couldn't clinch Firecrest but did see a couple of Nuthatches and my first Treecreeper of the year.

David

Hi David'

I was in Gosford Estate today aswell, in the wood right next to Longniddry and had Nuthatch there for the first time since (oh no, here we go again...!) 1985! ;) I doubt it would be the same bird. :eek!: They will be coming to the feeders in Longniddry soon, hopefully.

Not looked for the Firecrest yet ! Only other birds of note were a couple of Woodcock.

cheers G
