Lawn weed and feed. (1 Viewer)

Hi,

My feeling is that lawn weed and feed is not a good idea now that I'm feeding the birds. The lawn really could do with it but I won't if it will harm them.

Anyone out there know the answer please?

Q.C

Just leave the weeds or pull em out? Weeds will always come back so just pulling them out is just as useful as using chemicals.

Most proprietory weed and feed solutions are not harmful to pets/wildlife. If in doubt check what it says on the container but it should be OK to use.

Pulling weeds out is all very well but that won't feed the grass and after this winter the green carpet needs all the help it can get. It really is no problem....get spreddddin :t:

Whats wrong with a few green bits with different shaped leaves, if you leave them long enough they may flower and provide necter for insects which in turn will feed the chicks of the birds you are attracting to the garden.

I rarely treat my lawn and although I have had to change my perspective on what is acceptable for lawns, it was worth it. I have even created a wildflower meadow which is wonderful in summer!:t:

My grass is out of control! and yes it was affected by the harsh winter and I also have a dog who has weared some of it down, in the winter it looked terrible but now its just a massive green carpet!.....O and that was with no chemicals :t:

There is no such thing as a weed just an unwanted plant. I cut as little as possible, enough to let the robins enjoy a worm or two and in the fall the daisies and black eyed susans and coneflower are all over the fields.

If only I had room to grow a meadow......... Unfortunately, where I live, the council would love to see 31 houses per hectare, you can imagine how small that would leave the gardens. Luckily, I live in an area of ONB and that will never happen but we are still packed in tight enough.
I suppose the lawn would look better for just having a feed, that might be kinder, I shall look out and see if anyone produces just that.
However, I just have to have a slight disagreement with Gary, :king: having been an allotment holder (before it was built on) I can't agree with "No such thing as a weed", we had bindweed, couch grass and speedwell and in my flower borders at home I have bindweed, ground elder, creeping buttercup, couch grass and dock!!! I truly, truly hate bindweed (those pesky Victorians) but fortunately, I don't have mares tail or Japanese knot weed.

The trouble with lawn weed and feed is my next door neighbour put it on her lawn many years ago and for the rest of that year seemed to be having the grass requiring a cut almost every other day, not once a week as was more usual!:C

I will agree Canute, I have pulled much bindweed and am in the process of ridding my small 5 acres of all the multi-flora rose. (ouch, ouch). There are many undesirable invasive weeds. As far a using a weed and feed my dad put some on our property where I used to live and it killed all the earthworms (nightcrawlers) that I used to go hunting for when going fishing. Then the grass looked worse than it did before because the worms weren't there to make good soil.
