Latest IOC Diary Updates (6 Viewers)

Hmm. My notes have the Giant-Honeyeaters w/ viridis as Chattering and brunneirostris as Duetting. So which does brunneirostris do - chatter or duet? o_0
Yeah this is clearly wrong. Yellow-billed Giant-Honeyeater is great, but brunneirostris should be Duetting Giant-Honeyeater.

(And yes, brunneirostris absolutely duets, at ear-piercing volumes.)

Suggested name : Huon Bird-of-paradise / Paradisier de Huon

OK, so which Lophorinas are where now? I'm completely lost, & have no idea which I've seen in the Mt. Hagen area. Huzzah for nomenclatural stability. >/

What I had:

L. minor, Lesser Lophorina - southeastern form
L. niedda, Crescent-caped Lophorina - Vogelkop area
L. superba, Greater Lophorina - the widespread form which I've seen

If I follow things correctly (& I'm about 90% sure I do not):

L. minor - unchanged
L. niedda => becomes L. superba. Common name becomes Vogelkop Lophorina. Range unchanged
L. superba => becomes L. femina. Same common name & range, except for...
split of taxon latipennis to L. latipennis, Huon Lophorina - peninsula of the name

OK. Hmm. It's odd that they cite the reason for the change as based

Ah, ok, I see what I did.

Here is the revised taxonomy. This matches what Elliott et al. (2022) have in their chart of the name changes:

L. minor - unchanged southeastern peninsula form
L. niedda of Irestedt et al. (2017) => becomes L. superba. Common name becomes Vogelkop Lophorina. Range unchanged.
L. superba of Irestedt et al. (2017) => becomes L. latipennis. This is the widespread one. I don't think Huon Lophorina would be a good common name for this one. It's probably better to stick with Greater Lophorina for it.

Here's the Elliott et al. paper that has the chart of which names go where: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/368392258_Elliott_et_al_2022Av_Syst111-26Lophorina_superba

Greater is for L. superba. Latipennis is living in Huon peninsula

I do not think that is correct. That's not what is in the chart from the paper I linked, which seems to be the source of the changes.

L. superba is now Vogelkop. That is quite clear from reading through the two Elliott papers. They spell out that superba was the traditional name for birds from that region, and that Irestedt et al. were mistaken to change this. The change of common name for birds from this region from Crescent-caped to Vogelkop was probably intended to help make things more clear, but the timing actually muddied the waters further by introducing too many changes at once.

L. latipennis latipennis sensu stricto is in the Huon peninsula, yes. The broader latipennis, however, includes additionally femina (per Elliott et al. 2020 & 2022; = superba of Irestedt et al. 2017) of the Central Rages & the form from the Mt. Hagen area (femina/latipennis' per Elliott et al. 2022 & 2022; = addenda of Irestedt et al. 2017).

This is a case where the IOC's habit of breaking up changes into different lists simply breaks down & creates more confusion, IMHO. They would be better served in cases like this to list every single taxon in a 'before' & 'after' column, as the chart in the 2022 Elliott paper does.

I would expect :

Vogelkop / Crescent-caped Lophorina:
  • L. niedda inopinata => becomes again L. superba superba
  • L. niedda niedda => becomes again L. superba niedda

Greater Lophorina:
  • L. superba superba => becomes again L. latipennis feminina
  • L. superba addenda => becomes L. latipennis addenda
  • L. superba latipennis => becomes again L. latipennis latipennis

See "Working Group Avian Checklists, version 0.04 (7/07/2024)" treatments on Avibase: superba, niedda, feminina, addenda, and latipennis.

Yellow-throated Leaflove Atimastillas flavicollis Yellow-gorgeted Greenbul Change English name of Atimastillas flavicollis from Yellow-throated Leaflove to Yellow-gorgeted Greenbul following Clements. This restricts the use of "leaflove" to Phyllastrephus scandens and eliminates the confusing use of "Yellow-throated Greenbul" which has also been attributed to Arizelocichla chlorigula.

Pale-throated Leaflove Atimastillas flavigula (including soror) is split from Yellow-throated Leaflove A. flavicollis based on differences in morphology and vocalizations (del Hoyo & Collar 2016; HBW/BirdLife).

Atimastillas flavicollis flavicollis Senegal and Gambia to n Cameroon and nw Central African Republic

Atimastillas flavigula soror c Cameroon to wc Ethiopia and c DR Congo
Atimastillas flavigula flavigula Angola, se DR Congo to Uganda, w Kenya and w Tanzania
This has been edited (as has the related diary entry) to be consistent with the English name change so both of the new species are now Greenbul not Leaflove:

Jul; 26 Post split of Pale-throated Greenbul from Yellow-gorgeted Greenbul (Yellow-throated Leaflove).

Does anyone know how many taxonomic updates are left?
We will likely "close the books" on IOC 14.2 by the end of this week. There are still about 30-40 or so minor to major discrepancies between the draft of the updated Clements/WGAC lists that haven't yet been incorporated into IOC 14.2, but we want to publish IOC 14.2 before the end of August. Most of these will be incorporated into IOC 15.1 which will be published in early January 2025. But between the releases of IOC 14.2 and 15.1 we will, of course, post any of these changes on the website as we finalize them.
