Lake District (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I'm moving from Berkshire to the Lake District next month and wondered what I'm likely to see, raptor-wise? I'm obviously going to miss seeing the Red Kites down here (don't think they've made the lakes yet?), but would appreciate any info.

Cheers,
Simon

Plus the Ospreys at Lake Bassenthwaite, Keswick should be arriving back late April.

The Osprey Fanatic :flyaway::egghead:

Foregot about them and supposed to be making a trip in April to see Eagle and Osprey hopefully.

Golden Eagles, Ospreys and Peregrines. Not a bad trade off...;)

However, if I was desperate to see a Red Kite, where would be the nearest place to see them? Other side of the Pennines?

Eccup reservoir just north of Leeds is also reliable for Red Kite but not a patch on Loch Ken for scenery and all round wildlife interest.

Up in Cumbria Geltsdale is good for SE Owl, Merlin and a reasonable chance of Hen Harrier. Trough of Bowland is also just around the corner and is probably the only reliable place for breeding Hen Harrier in England. Also a chance of Eagle Owl if last year's events are anything to go by.

there are some goshawks in the forest of bowland too. are there any goshawks in the lakes?

marsh harriers at leighton moss too! youwillalso see tawny own, s e owl, probably log eared and barn owl in the forest of bowland too. thereareprobablysome hobby'saroundtoo - not sure of there status in the north.

It's all looking pretty damn good then! Many thanks for replies. Have been walking on the Forest of Bowland before, will certainly keep a keen eye for Goshawks and Eagle Owl's, never seen either!

And my beloved Red kites are fairly close too...

:t:

Hi Simon there is also a good chance of red kites in the Trough of Bowland as well usually between Lancaster and Dunsop Bridge.Large open areas of farmland available.Eagle Owls are still there and on a good day Goshawks too.Good luck.

The lake district has the worlds highest density of breeding peregrines of 90-110 breding pairs, according to the cumbrian breeding bird atlas.

Brilliant! Imagine seeing all three in a day's yomping!

The Peregrine is probably my favourite BOP, but one I've seen precious little of, so that's a fabulous statistic to dangle in front of me. Great news.

I spent 3 days there in November, I was outside, walking the hills during all the daylight hours and do you know what? All I saw were buzzards, not to quash the enthusiasm, but it might be an idea to ask around for some tried and tested viewing spots if you're really keen.

Don't forget we have a high concentration of barn owls. Caught one in the headlights driving home tonight. After I parked the car, almost deafened by the hooting of tawney owls.

'you are guaranteed to see deer, red squirrels, ospreys and peregrine falcons'

I'd beg to differ.......

Can't knock the outstanding natural beauty of the landscape, though; breath-taking.

Golden Eagle at Haweswater (prob the best time of year for him displaying is around now), Peregrine are all over The Lakes but again there are 2-3 pairs in the Haweswater area, Merlin are also resonably common.Goshawk are a rare breeder in Cumbria but there have been sightings in Grizedale Forest.Bowland is a much better bet for these birds. I was lucky enough to see one on Friday! Also look out for Otters from the Lower Hide at Leighton Moss and also from the Hide at Bassenthwaite. Good luck.

One day in spring in the Dunsop valley I had Merlin,Kestral,Sparrowhawk,Buzzard,Peregrine,Hen Harrier, and Gos. I only went to find ring ouzel and vsaw them too.
Send a private message if you want the area.
