Lake District - Esthwaite Water Ospreys (3 Viewers)

Esthwaite Water in the southern Lake District, a few miles west of Windermere, has a pair of nesting Ospreys. Apparently Ospreys have been visiting the lake for the last 13 years and have nested there for the last 5, but their existence was kept secret to prevent disturbance. Now there is a Facebook page and "Osprey Safari" boat trips to view the Ospreys. More information on these websites:

Thanks Helen, nice to know. I can even take my non birding wife for a boat trip whilst I hopefully view the Ospreys. Sounds great day out.

It just goes to show that they have started to nest in the lakes long before was made public, outstanding work to the guys who have kept this under wraps for so long.

Both nest sites at Esthwaite are now occupied and both pairs of Ospreys are sitting. Great news!

Hoping to visit the Lakes tomorrow with family in tow - where's best to see the Ospreys fishing? I spent some time there earlier in the year and they were around the nest site but weren't fishing -they flew over the hills to the south for ages.

Any advice on where/when to see them fishing would be great!

I haven't been there myself, but if you check out the links in my first post in this thread, you should get some ideas.

Apparently only one pair of Ospreys are still on their nest, with 3 chicks. The other pair, which were immature birds, have left their nest, which was on the purpose built platform.

Good luck and post what you see if you go. Thanks!

Had a great day in the Lakes. Turned up without booking at 10am at Esthwaite, the guy was really helpful and set us up with lifejackets and an electric boat. £20 for as long as we wanted. Did a circuit of the water and had brief views of 2 adults as they flew over the nest - chicks were calling but the adults flew off again in a SW direction. Didn't see them again but had a great time.
