Black tern indeed - note the long(ish) bill, extensive "headphones" i.e. extensive black marks extending from the crown over the ear coverts and nearly reaching the cheeks, and the hint of dark shoulder patch - all good points for separating from white-winged.

But I'm confused because ebird did not confirm the op bird as a black tern...

Thank you so much. I realised that was my mistake. There was a wrong photo belonging to a white winged tern among the correct ones.
