interbreading Jackdaw??? (1 Viewer)

What's more likely is for Carrion and Hooded Crows to interbreed. These 'Hybrid Crows' show variable amounts of grey, but not as extensive as on a pure Hooded Crow. They're quite common in areas where the range of Carrion and Hooded Crow overlap, e.g. where I live in NE Scotland, and possibly where you live too.

They breed in Holland in increasing numbers (having presumably travelled there by ship) and it wouldn't exactly be too unexpected for them to jump on the ferry to Harwich at some point. There is a certain 'big Jackdaw' look about them.

Worth getting news out on it or getting it checked out if it is. With the high chance of it coming from a 'countable' feral population it'd be as good a tick as Golden Pheasant or Egyptian Goose in Britain. I've been looking casually in south England for them for years whenever I see groups of crows near docks. Has to happen sooner or later

Okay, we have here two possibilities:
1. A Carrion Crow x Hooded Crow hybrid. This would be very frequently encountered in the Paisley area, which is quite near to areas where Hooded Crows dominate. It would, I expect, be quite a common bird there.
2. A House Crow, which has never been recorded in the wild anywhere in Britain.
A Carrion x Hooded hybrid could look very similar to a House Crow in terms of plumage, with just subtle structural differences to distinguish them.
So which is it? I know where my money's going!

It was similar to this although the cap was prominent. Hence the reference back to the Jackdaw.

Bare in mind that House crow has been recorded in Ireland.

I remember seeing a photo of that bird... couldn't remember where in Ireland it was though. Did it get accepted in the end? What're the rules over there regarding ship assists? I think the Irish record occurred when the Dutch population was either non-existant or very small but with this species I guess it could always occur anywhere there are large International ports.

I saw something similiar I think on the Isle of Man in December - see below - and I did query it with a birder there as it looked smaller than a hooded crow and was more 'jackdawish' in its behaviour. However the guy thought it was a hybrid - what do you think? Photo taken on the shore near Ramsey. Is it similar to the one you saw?

High all.
I was back down the coast today and my bird was still sitting where i saw it last week. (she appears to have shrunk a bit)
