How is your 2011 List Going? (1 Viewer)

As a newbie only started list on 27 Jan 11

30 Jan 2011

Priorslee Balancing Lake 1345-1530 (Telford, Shropshire, England)

Went to try out mates Opticron scope and my own new Opticron 10 x 42 Binos. Had reasonably good time until pillock came along with kyak and paddled straight through ice to where birds were. Absolutely furious at the guy but he took no notice.

25 Tufted Duck (Aythya fuligula)
26 Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus)
27 Little Gull (Hydrocoloeus minutus)

Four new species of waterfowl today on the only open patch of water for miles around, so I'm now up to 88 for the year.

85. Ross's Goose
86. Redhead
87. Northern Pintail
88. Snow Goose

Hi Spotter,

Good to see another birder in Shropshire!
That Little Gull is an interesting record, are you sure it was one, because they are a realy rarity for the county, maybe one every 2 years or so.

Will, There were 2 o3 of them and to me as a newbie and looking at description in RSPB book they looked like the pictures and matched the description. However as there was no-one else spotting to ask I may have been wrong. Thanks

As I only started doing this fairly seriously as a hobby last June, after my first visit to a bird hide in Caithness, Scotland and only count what I manage to photograph, I had a really good January with 14 new species and 52 all told. I added 5 new ones this weekend, Collared Dove, White-fronted Goose, Barnacle Goose, Treecreeper and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. I'm well on my way to beating last years list which was 113 species of which 99 I'd never photographed before. I'm heading to the Atlantic Islands in March, don't know where yet, probably Tenerife or the Azores, and visiting New Foundland in June, so it should be a great year.

One new bird today, probably the last for the month unless something interesting turns up at the feeders. I'm therefore at 89 for the year.

89. American Herring Gull

as that would be a record count for the county, i'd imagine they'd be something else.

sorry!

a really good days birding round West Cornwall today.

117. Grey Plover
118. Water Pipit
119. Common Scoter
120. Purple Sandpiper
121. Eider
122. White-fronted Goose
123. Pacific Diver finally after several attempts!
124. Shoveler
125. Ring-necked Duck

A couple living near the college has a lot of hummingbirds (and butterflies!) in their yard. Not our normal Ruby-throated Hummingbirds but several Rufous, an Anna's and an Allen's. Pretty good for January.

Popped over this afternoon and saw:
131. Rufous Hummingbird (male)
132. Anna's Hummingbird (male)

We're all wondering if the hummers willt stay through the storm that will sweep in tomorrow dropping nighttime temperatures from 61F to 24F and may bring snow on Friday.

Today was the first opportunity I've had to go birding this month because of a severe ice storm last week which made the roads treacherous and caused widespread power outages. I found three new year birds today, so I'm up to 92.

90. Snow Bunting
91. Ruby-crowned Kinglet
92. Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Good to hear that you managed to see some new birds. After our mini ice storm we went out yesterday to a local nature center, hoping for Hooded Merganser and Night Herons. We didn't see anything new. In fact, there weren't many birds around at all. We did enjoy watching an Osprey carrying off a fish, though. Unfortunately, it was a bit far away for a decent photo.

One probable benefit from the storm is the large number of Snow Buntings around here. They were probably pushed farther south than normal by the bad weather.

Nice picture of an Osprey. I probably won't see any around here until April or May.

The weather is very odd this winter. We've had a lot of Purple Finches and Pine Siskins, both species that we don't usually see here. And people have started seeing Cliff Swallows already!

Jeff, we do not get the Cliff Swallows here in Missouri until late April or early May! (We canceled our trip down to Texas. Weather looked to unfavorable. I guess we will just endure the frigid, snowy, icy conditions here for awhile longer!

No new year birds, but I did see four (4) TRUMPETER SWANS yesterday on a small open area on a local lake being kept open by hundreds of CANADA GEESE.

Good Birding!

Turns out the reported Cliff Swallows were actually Cave Swallows, Larry. False alarm.

You were probably wise to cancel your trip. It's 26F as I write this.

I found a bird in my daily notes which I had forgotten to include in this year's list.

87. Hooded Merganser, February 7, on the Missouri River adjacent to the Lake Contrary area, Saint Joseph, Missouri.

Everybody in the colder areas, Stay Warm!

Was up in NYC for a bit of business Wednesday morning, and took a quick stroll through Central Park to try and get Black-capped Chickadee to accompany my usual MD Carolinas... no luck with the chickadee, but did get:

63. Brown-headed Cowbird
