How close together to put nesting boxes (1 Viewer)

what is the rule of thumb for putting bird houses in the same area?...how far apart should i put them

I think it was 25 feet apart on average, but I have seen boxes quite colse together. It depends on what you are trying to attract. Sometimes two different species can nest on the same tree at different heights. They may even seem to be working together to defend the whole area, gaing some benefit from being so close together. That said My personal preference would be at least 10 ft. apart and not more than 25 (unless you really want to). It helps avoid problems. But it sure is neat to have them so close together.

Hi,

You should try to allow 1/4 –acre between most bird houses. Since most birds are territorial, an average sized yard will probably only hold one nesting pair of a specific species. Similar to nest-box height, territory size varies from species to species. While nuthatches and chickadees need one to several acres for a territory, tree swallows only need a few feet of space. You can put out several bird houses in a small area. Watch for one of them to be occupied and then take the rest down.
