Hiking: Curio vs CL 10x25 (4 Viewers)

OUCH!! The prices have really gone up on the Mikrons. Five years ago I got the 6x15 new for $200. Checking today on A**zon they are priced at $279 in the U.S. I couldn't find current US prices on the 7x.That 479 euro price is steep.

Yes incredible inflation over here in The Netherlands and elsewhere in the EU, they need money for their crazy projects i guess… anyway no politics. I just checked the bill and i bought my Nikon Mikron 6x15 CF silver in march 2023 for E 316,- (including 21% VAT). If i remember correctly it was on a sale.

I was off to do a spot of work today, which got cancelled last minute, so decided to pop down to my local wildlife reserve, a mile away, and have a coffee.
I always have my 8x20's in my bag, for just such occassions. My HT's were back at home as I hadn't intended on any wildlife observing today.
This is where my 8x25's were a let down. They just weren't with me all the time like these are.
A sparrowhawk flew past with its catch, and an egret caught a good fish.
Glad i had my awkward fiddly little Leicas to hand. This is where they shine.

It doesn't sound like you have tried the Curio 7x21 yet, but I think when you do, you will be pleasantly surprised. The Curio's have equally good optics as the CLs if not better, plus you will have a larger FOV, they will be brighter, you will have less shake, and you will have better DOF. Even though you say you can hold the CLs steady 10x will have much more shake than 7x, so what you gain in additional detail because of the higher magnification you lose in resolution because you are shaking. Smaller compact binoculars like the Curio and CLs are harder to hold steady than larger full size binoculars.

It sounds like, to me, you would be better off with the Curio because you are doing a lot of hiking, and you would like to use the binoculars for exploring cities and going to sporting events. The Curio would be ideal for those kinds of things and more easily carried in your pocket. If you're sold on a 10x25 binocular, and you are ok with carrying that size of binocular, you might consider an IS binocular like the new Nikon 10x25 S which is much improved optically and mechanically over the original version and eliminates the shaking at 10x and actually increases resolution by as much as 30% because you are steady and makes observing things for a longer period of time much easier and more relaxing. Otherwise, I would get the Curio.

Very well put! 👍

I very often carry a pocket binocular with me, the little Nikon when it’s very hot and there is little room to put even my Leica Ultravid 10x25. Also i take it with me for museum/theater. But its not used as a dedicated nature/bird binocular.
I wish Leica would make a small but good quality 7x18 binoculair or something like that.
