Hey everybody! My name is Frank and I just got my first birdhouse for Father's Day. My wife and I have an 18 month old baby boy at home and I like the idea of getting good enough at this to have a feathered friend move in so that I can show our son as he gets into his twos!
I'll attach some pictures of the birdhouse and add as many details as possible about measurements, size of openings, placement, etc. Per Amazon, it's made of cedar and obviously painted white. Honestly, we got this one because we liked the look of it, but we know NOTHING about any of this, hence why I'm here! I realize color, style, etc might be a factor in deterring or attracting birds so I'd like to know if we have any shot at all with this or if we need to make some changes or if this is nothing more than a decoration.
The big entrance seems to be 1.75" wide and is completely walled off from the two smaller openings on the side that have smaller openings.
Our second floor apartment is here in a pretty busy part of Orlando - by the Mall at Millenia for any of you that are familiar - and faces east towards a fenced in courtyard with lots of palm trees and gets lots of sun. A couple of articles I read online said nesting birds may want to be sheltered from light, wind, and rain and other birds as much as possible (very hot and rains for an hour every afternoon now in the summer here in Orlando) so I secured it facing our apartment (west) and it is covered and pretty sheltered. Honestly, it's so sheltered that I'm not sure how any bird can find it to scope it out, I can mount it on the other side of the pillar which faces south. It's still covered and won't have sun shining into the opening, but will have much more exposure to wind, rain, birds, etc. Not sure if where it is now is best or if moving it is better.
There's spanish moss all around down here so I put some in the holes because maybe they'd like that, but it could just be wrong altogether .
It's mid-June while I'm posting this and I'm thinking maybe it's too late in the season, but I'd like any and all info, tips and feedback on what species I might attract here in Central Florida if I make the right changes. Thank you all and our family is very excited to learn about all of it!
