Trefil/Silent Valley

Popped in to Trefil on the way home from work where the Swallows were collecting nest material in the dried up pond.Loads of Mipit,Skylark and Wheatear including the most obliging male you will ever come across.Other stuff were Blackbird, Linnet, Raven, Buzzard and Carrion Crow.
Went down to SV this evening and walked up onto Carn Y Cefn.Loads of the first three species above along with 50+ Raven.Others were loads of Gulls and C Crows on the tip.A Red Kite joined the proceedings and along with two Gulls decided to have a go at a tasty morsel a Raven had ( see pic ).

Had a busy day today on the Bird photography front.First was a 6.30 start with Alan to meet up with a mutual friend (Ken1940golf) near Chepstow to shoot Whitethroats at Aust Warth. The Whitethroats didnt perform as expected but got some great stuff of a Reed Warbler.
Then it was onto Tintern to shoot some Dippers. These, along with a pair of Grey Waggys were fab to shoot as you cant get near them around here.It also gave me the chance to check out the video function on my camera (see link).
This evening I was up in the Brecon Beacons for some monitoring work and it was good to see the Little Ringed Plovers settling down in territory.

Had my first Swifts of the year this evening. Two were above the Asda Car Park in Brynmawr which made waiting ages for the wife and daughter a little more bearable.

Dottrels

Got back from hillwalking today to see that a pair of Dottrels have turned up just out of county near the Llwyn Onn res in the Beacons. They were there last year but I didnt bother and always regretted it.Popped up there this evening and bumped into another Gwent birder Tom Chinnick (good to see you again Tom ;)) who had his scope already on them. This saved me scouring the hillside and we had some great views.Managed a few pics too and may pop up again this week if they hang around.

Cheers Gaz.

Popped down to the Oak wood above Cwm first thing this morning in the hope of some Wood Warbler.I have always had them there but sadly this year nothing at all.I did have two down in Cwmcarn the other evening though.
I did get a Yellowhammer though which is a first for me around here!

Popped out lunchtime for a wander about Newport RSPB in the fine weather. Got out of car, Hobby hawking right above me. Sat outside the visitor centre with a coffee and informed the reserve manager. He got his Swarovski's out and we stayed on it until it flew over to the power station and, to everyone's surprise another one joined it!

Fantastic to see a pair down there. Needless to say, mobiles became red hot from tweets and excited conversations with friends. Brilliant news!
