Gwent birding (1 Viewer)

Mon 17th Jan 2011

1st bit of decent weather (although its raining again now) this morning and had a friend visit the hide...guess what, very quiet. All the regular visitors (apart from LTT's) but not as frequent as they have been.

He had a go of my 400mm lens and I had a try of his 300mm L f4...used to have one of these and really love them - struggled for length as expected but a bully came in quite close on the fence and got a shot I was very happy with !

good to see Steve Williams checking up on Waunafon where he saw two Short-eared Owls the other evening. Wonder how many will birds will appear there this winter?

Thats a stunning Bully image Al,cracking detail!

Well done Steve on spotting the SEO`s.I was over there last week but nothing showed.Hopefully get over there sometime this week fingers crossed.

One Shortie showing at Waunavon this evening.Came out very late too (16.50) but put that down to two off road bikes ripping up the mountain. They always find a way dont they :(.

The week that was

Garden wise its been a bit up n down....couple of highlights the Brambling has been in (thankfully on Kens visit) and the long tailed tits have found their way back after going missing for 3 days.

Out of County I had a trip out with the wife and ended up at the Elan Valley...saw loads of Fieldfare, stopped on the side of the road to watch a buzzard eating a fox in a field and called into gigrin for 45 mins and saw a couple of white red kites (one tagged one not)

Not a birding subject but one of our birding colleagues has just won Photographer of the Year at our Camera Club...step forward Mr Gary Howells and take a bow - congrats mate, well deserved....:clap:

Also congrats on getting 6 images accepted in the digital salon and also on the award.

Think you know who will be giving you a run for your money this year too

Couple of pics from me this week.

Nice pics there Mr Coles, that Kite is a stunner.Hope he is still there in a week or two.

Garnlydan Res this evening had 39 BH Gulls,15 Goosander (5 male)and 8 Wigeon (3 male).

Two Short Eared Owl pellets found by the Dog last Friday up Waunafon contained, you guessed it,Voles!

Wed / Thurs

Had a walk through the forest between Aberbeeg n Cwm yesterday...buzzards, crows etc but also saw a flock of about 60 finches which was made up of sikins, redpoll and goldies. Heard Crossbill but no sighting.

This morning, male goosander on the Cardi pond.

In the garden this morning Single Redpoll on the niger feeder, plenty of siskins, male brambling, 6 goldies, robins, blackbird and the usual tits including longies.

red kite, buzzard, buzzard, kestrel, buzzard, kestrel, jackdaw, jackdaw, jackdaw, sparrowhawk
new game of spot the bird on the lamp posts on the HofV road between dowlais and ebbw - sorry, kite was odd one out as it wasn't on a lamp post, but needed mentioning.

weekend before last had a wander through cardi woods - green woodpecker in the trees east of the pond, plenty of siskin over towards sirhowy garage - seems to be a regular spot for them over there

Two SEO showing very well yesterday evening over `The Bog`along with a Peregrine flyover.Really wished they would show earlier though to get some pics.
A red letter day in the garden this morning! The wife has been feeding a "little bird" all week and he came back this morning.Expecting the usual Jackdaw or House Sparrow (the only birds to frequent my garden!) a Song Thrush turned up.Happy Days!!!!
Pic taken through the window which the wife noticed was rather dirty so thats my job for today :C.

Just been following a Red Kite for about 30 mins from the 'sheep track' behind The Castle, then over to Beaufort Wells and across to the Bryn Serth site. Haven't seen one over this way before - although have seen them over Trefil and on Mynydd Llangynidr a mile north of the Carno Res.

Just think of it as payment for persuading the Song Thrush to hang around...

I could have done but instead made sure we were out shopping for long enough to avoid it :t:.
Went back up to Waunafon this evening to walk the dog and see the Shorties.Met up with Alan and we both bumped into Hugh from Shirenewton (good to meet you Hugh) and the Owls gave some fab views through the bins.Even managed a pic!

Goosander Roost Survey

Hi all.

Just had an email from a GOS member conducting a survey of roosting Goosander in Gwent on Feb 12/13 and would like some help to cover some of the main waterbodies in Gwent.Basically it means arriving at the site about an hour before dusk and count the birds in noting from which direction they came, sex of the birds and any interaction etc.
The available waterbodies are-
Garn Lakes,Beaufort Ponds,Beaufort Hill Ponds,Bryn Bach Park,Cwmbran Boating Lake,Dunlop Semtex Pond,Machine Pond.
I have also put forward the Blue Lake near Sirhowy as I have had roosting Goosander there before.
Anyone that is available on those dates and is willing to help could you let me know and I will pass your message on.

Cheers,Mike.

Hello,Hello,Hello,is there anybody there,there,there?

Seriously though folks there are only four sites left for this Goosander survey and are all in this area. They are-The Blue Lake at Waun Y Pound,The Carno Res near Garnlydan,Shon Sheffrey Res in Tredegar and Cwmtillery Res.You need to be on site at 4.15pm and just count and sex the birds coming in until dark.Go on,you know it makes sense ;).
