If you want one book just for gulls, then I echo Niels' suggestion - Olsen & Larsson is probably best.

If you start looking to build up a few references, the following books may be of interest
For gulls specifically:
Olsen & Larsson Gulls of Europe, Asia & North America as mentioned. Another (cheaper) option is Howell's Gulls of the Americas, which I think is a fantastic book (remainders going for around A$20 online at present) BUT may not cover all the gulls found in Britain.

For seabirds in general:
Onley & Scofield Albatrosses, Petrels and Shearwaters of the World - tubenoses only
Harrison Seabirds: An Identification Guide - a little dated with taxonomy though, which is relevant to the gulls
Howell Petrels, Albatrosses & Storm-Petrels of North America - another one that may not cover all British tubenoses, but a fantastic book
Blomdahl Flight Identification of European Seabirds I've heard good things about but haven't seen it myself yet

John Dunn and Steve Howell, Gulls of the Americas, is what I use.

Personally, most helpful was a knowledgable friend with enough patience to explain what was going on.

Is there any book on identification of Terns?

I have just recieved a copy of Olsen & Larsson Gulls of Europe, Asia & North America as mentioned what a great book will be spending the next few weeks digesting this information also recieved Blomdahl Flight Identification of European Seabirds and this will be the next book I read many thanks for all the information everyone
