Dear Members and Bird Watchers!

I spotted some birds today, very far away so no good pictures.

But I ID picture A1 and A2 (same bird) as a Herring Gull

B1 and B2 (same bird) was ID as a young gull. But then I see something I think is the legs sticking out behind the bird. So I do not think it is a gull, never seen a gull witht he legs sticking out behind the tail.

Anyone have any idea what ID it can be?

Kind Regards and Happy Birding
Aladdin

Hello Aladdin,

First is an adult Yellow-legged Gull imo. Much black and only a small mirror and a narrow, but complete band on p5 is enough for a confident ID at that location I think.

If forced, I would opt for a 2cy Lesser black backed Gull for your second bird.
Extensive dark head and appearant large dark centers to the scapulars and back (and lack of paler inner primarirs are not so good for a YLG. But as YLG look somertimes different to those I see in Germany and its a long time I was in N-Spain, better wait for Lou and others.

Thank you very much Alexander Stöhr

Highly appreciated!

I will report them to eBird and not as a Herring Gull
