Griswold’s UK Birding List 2022 (1 Viewer)

Agree with Owen, but I think my favorite is the crane. I am happy Max shares this hobby with you.
And me Lisa. And thanks. I’ll pass on your compliments. It’s great as he spends a whole day off the Occulus and he really enjoys. He wants to check with his Grampa now to see if he’s seen a Little Gull:ROFLMAO:

Had the day off so headed up to Dinas with my OH and hound. Absolutely stunning day. Such a beautiful little reserve and at its very best this time of the year.

Had a couple of rolls whilst watching many Siskins at the bird table. Could hear a Garden Warbler form just past the car park.

On the reserve proper were good numbers of Pied Flycatchers and Common Redstarts. Thought I had my first Spotted Fly of the year but I’m not too sure now. So off the list it remains. Heard a few Tree Pipits and a couple of Wood Warblers. Then walking back had a great view of a Wood Warbler. Could also hear a Cuckoo down the valley.

Forgot to say we saw our first House Martins of the year just outside Pontardawe.

From RSPB Dinas we headed up the valley a bit. Checked out a Whinchat site but find one. Linnets and Wheatear present though. Also had a Willow Warbler sit up nicely for us. A great day finished off nicely with several Red Kite over Defynnog.

(y)Great find by Thomas this morning at Goldcliff. A Kentish Plover. Unfortunately I had to go into town to get my youngest’s hair cut. Everything seemed to take an age. My OH deciding to have lunch out at the same time!

Anyway the bird left but was refound at Goldcliff point. Down I went. Great to meet @cafebirder there and have a chat about birding areas around the channel. Also Steve (Preddy) was also there so it was great to put a face to the name.

The Kentish Plover was showing well and was a lifer.

Over at Goldcliff itself it was quite quiet. LRP’s, 2 Greenshank and 2 Whimbrel were the highlights.

Headed down to Llanellishire with the hound today. A Turtle Dove had been reported at Pont Abraham roundabout. Drove round and round several times but couldn’t locate it. Decided to stop as I felt I was beginning to look a little odd. Which is going some n Llanellishire

So we headed down to Burryport/ Pembrey. Tide was miles out and there were heaps there enjoying the bank holiday. Had decent views of 3 Whimbrel and a Common Sandpiper was good to see. Picked up a year tick in the form of a Rock Pipit. A regular spot for them.

Cracking day out with Rob over in Somerset yesterday. Good to bump into some other South Wales birders at the same time - Mike, Gareth, Steve etc. Also good to meet Rich. A birder from Devon but originally from Yorkshire.

Stopped at Tealham Moor and watched 4 Cattle Egret for a short while.

At Ham Wall there were good numbers of Garden Warblers mixed in with the usual Warblers. Also had great views of Bitterns. In the wood by the Avalon Hide Rob picked out what was for me the bird of the day. A stunning Tawny Owl sat up on a branch. From VP1 we had ok scope views of the Wood Sandpiper and from Tor hide I had a brief view of a Bearded Tit. A decent flock of Whimbrel passed through and I think we counted 5 Glossy Ibis as well.

Getting hungry now we headed to Noah’s Lake. A cormorant was wrestling an enormous eel when we arrived but eventually managed to get it down. Distant views of the first Hobby’s of the day as well. A Great White Egret sat in the reeds in front of the hide.

Returning back to the car park we had great views of at least 7 further Hobby over the wood. And then at the car park itself a Sparrowhawk was drifting over which another Hobby clearly took offence to. It’s the first time I’ve witnessed such a clash.

Time for a pint in The Railway Inn. Didn’t catch the name of it but the local cider was very refreshing.

Stopped off at Westhay but only heard further Bitterns booming and another Hobby. Most birders were noting the lack of hirrundines present.

At Pilning on the way back we hadn’t realised the footpath was closed so headed back to the car and decided to call it a day. Hopefully I’ll catch up with Rob on North Uist as our time there overlaps with his holiday.

Very jealous I love Ham Wall - did get a great view of a flying bittern at one of my local reserves, Brandon Marsh, yesterday. So also very happy :)
