Great Blue Heron (1 Viewer)

Managed to "break for the river" for a minute today ... and there it was! Still rather far for my little camera ... but the pose was precious!

Sorting through photos from previous walks found this one ... "extremely hot day" pose ... again too far for a decent photo ... it was all fluffed up and holding his wings to catch every bit of breeze it could.

I've been told that there are 6 Great Blue Herons in the area, but from my observations, at least one breeding pair has successfully raised 2 chicks.

The location is kept quiet, but apparently somebody in the city actually has a breeding pair that nest in his backyard! wow!

Hi...

Im Marlou from Philippines Im not to familiar with the Heron family but I was thinking if you can help me out, I just work near Olango Island in Cebu Philippines a bird sanctuary most of the birds that come to this area area Chinese birds. They look similar to your photos but are white in color. Are ther called white herons.

In Churchill too

We had a Great Blue Heron as of Sunday August 26 at the Port of Churchill. Talk about a ways away from where you'd expect him. Add to him a Little Blue Heron in the spring, Double-Crested Cormorant in spring and a nesting pair of Northern Wheatears at Fort Prince of Wales. Yet another great season in Churchill, Manitoba.

Wow! That's great! For us, since they've declared some of the land along the river as a conservation area we're seeing more of these "rare for a city" birds ... it's great! I don't know what type of Cormorants we have ... my photos of them off in the distance aren't clear enough for positive I.D. "big black bird"!

I'm not too familiar with all the types of herons and egrets around the world; there is a white phase Great Blue Heron ... but one would expect to find it amongst the normal blues. I'm not sure but we may have one of them around here as well as 'the grapevine' was reporting a white egret in this area ... I don't think so!

If you could post a picture in the forum thread that has I.D. requests, there should be several knowledgable birders who could help you.

......................

edit: I did find reference to a couple of the 5,000 some birds that grace the sanctuary there which may be of help. The Chinese Egret (Egretta eulophotes) and the Little Egret (Egretta garzetta). Both of these are white birds.
