The first one is the common green one (beileve it or not,) but the green one is the Great green Bush Cricket Tettigonia viridissima It can be very confusing when the green one looks so brown.

This is a link to Tettigonia viridissima, which looks extremely different.

http://tierbilder.naturecom.de/bilder/19-5.html

The genus Chorthippus belongs to the shorthorned grasshoppers and locusts (Caelifera) whereas the Tettigonia belong to the bush-crickets and such (Ensifera), which are characterised, among other things, by extremely long antennae.

I think concerning your photos: on the first one is Chorthippus albomarginatus, on the second photo is Chorthippus parallelus. But only 90% confidence in the species as I didn´t work with grasshoppers in recent months.

two more:

Thanks for the replies, two more taken today Beds/Herts border chalk grassland/scrub (Roesel's Bush-cricket is present there).

Hello,
The first one looks more like a dark bush cricket (f) - Pholidoptera griseoaptera. I'm afraid grasshoppers baffle me tho as the colour variations are so wide.

5 could be a Bow-Winged Grasshopper (Chorthippus biguttulus) but I can't really see the back of it.
Take more crickets ;-)

A Cricket for ID

A cricket, sorry about picture quality - I was working in the garden when the cricket appeared, I rushed in and grabbed my camera and found it had a 19-35mm non-macro lens on it!
Anyway, any offers of an ID?

Me too. With milk. And while we're talking about them can someone tell me why I have a garden surrounded by oaks and it's the only Bush Cricket I've never seen here!

Jen :)

Is this a lesser mottled grasshopper?

Found at edge of path through chalk grassland/scrub Millbrook Bedfordshire Oct 24.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions
Hugh

anyone know whay I cannot access thumbnails in these posts & others?

Hello Colin,

I take it you double left click on them? If they don't appear then it may be your settings that need attention or perhaps your using an old operating programme.

If double left clicking doesn't work, then its best to ask the BF Techno Weenies in the Forum dedicated to Computing. Just scroll down the various forums until you find it.

Hello Hugh,
It's a nymph of some sort. I photographed an identical one here a few days ago - will have a Google.

Jen

Looks like a Dark Bush-cricket nymph.
