Grafham Water (1 Viewer)

Grafham 'Christmas Day' morning; all the usual suspects seen. Long-tailed Duck (Drake) and juv Great Northern Diver off Marlow Point. Two Bewick's Swans in Savages Creek. Black-necked Grebe off Sailing Club and a Common Sandpiper on the dam.AU0I8903c1.JPG

Grafham 02 Feb 2025; the two Great Northern Divers still in the NW area; watched from Mander Carpark.
Ongoing study of the regular three 'boom' gulls, to determine if they are 'Caspian' or hybrids.

Grafham 15 Feb 2025; finally the two Great Northern Divers were reeled in today, the entire morning spent watching them and eventually they came very close to check me out! I've found this before when they are quite close, it may be the sound of the camera shutter that makes them come even closer. Eventually one suddenly flew out to the middle and 5 minutes later the 2nd bird did the same. Watching them closely running along the water for a good 40 metres shows just how ungainly they are trying to take off; once up they settle down a bit.

First time I’ve been on BF for awhile, so only just seen this image. Great photo Matthew. I’ve never seen the new bird close up, so was never sure of its age. The back bird is clearly a 2cy, but the bird is foreground has very different feather pattern on mantle. I need to do some further reading, I think.

Grafham 8 Mar 2025; three Black necked Grebes off Mander Car park all afternoon plus one Great Northern Diver off the dam in the morning.

Grafham 15 Mar 2025; Red-breasted Merganser still present early morning off the lagoons with Goldeneye. Also a pair of Goosander off the lagoons. Great Northern Diver still off dam mid morning.

Grafham 16 Mar 2025; Merganser still with two Goosander early morning off the lagoons. Great Northern diver still plus a Little Ringed Plover on the dam.

Jan -Mar 2025 ; one of the pair of gulls that hang around; this one appears fairly good for Caspian, albeit has has short legs. A large bully of a bird and very vocal with a Caspian laugh. The smaller bird is probably a hybrid, the two are always close together and spend a lot of time at the fishing lodge on the boom.AU0I3144c1.JPGAU0I3317c1.JPGAU0I3073c1.JPG
