Few birds heard on walk along the path to Hoo Moor/Fernilee. Sad to see thousands of trees have been chopped down and lots of tall stacks of timber logs line the path along the way. Worrying for the thousands of birds which may have lived there. But joy to see four red deer crossing our path.

Were these trees cut down Coniferous or decidous birdleg.

They were coniferous. The Goyt Valley is mainly run by the forestry commission. Part United Utilities and part landowner. There is regular tree felling and forestry management in the valley.

Birds will move elsewhere if other conifers are about clearings are very good in early stages for breeding birds, Tree Pipit, Nightjar, Woodlark in winter hunting Great Grey Shrike that's general throughtout the country. Those lower in the food chain would suffer more moth larvea and other small invertebrates.

Anyone have info on the Parrot Crossbills reported today in the Goyt?

I suspect a few will be twitching them tomorrow!

The apparent Parrot Crossbills were photographed on 1st December drinking from a puddle but not heard to call. Unfortunately since the rain on Thursday there are now many more puddles about. I've seen the pictures today & they look good to me. As far as I know they've not been seen since the 1st although flyover Crossbills have been noted. I spent a couple of hours down there today but didn't see any Crossbills at all. Quite a few Bramblings about though.

Thanks John and djay....Yes coniferous. Although there is regular tree felling in the valley, it was the first time I have seen a huge amount of trees chopped down....have been walking in the valley for more that 5 years and it has never been like that before. Just a bit of a shock to see it like this that's all.

No sightings of any parrot crossbills seen whilst on walks here from me.

A short walk up to todbrook resevoir this morning revealed 5 goosander 4m 1f plus 10 wigeon ,wigeon are not seen that often on this res

Another walk up to todbrook res this morning ,the goosander are still there at the top end could not beleive the amount of common gulls there must have been about 100 normaly its under 10

At last some migrants in the valley ,short walk today another birder had seen 3 redstarts and 2 tree pipets ,we saw 1 tree pipet 1 curlew 2 dippers 1 nuthatch 2 goldcrests and best of all 2 pied flycatchers

PS their was also a common sandpiper seen but not by me

A Tree Pipit singing atop the trees just north of Errwood car park this morning, plus a Common Sandpiper along the shore line of Errwood reservoir.

2 swifts over whaley bridge this morning in the poring rain ,a week later than last year for my first local swifts

Cuckoo at taxel edge yesterday heard but not seen ,I was working at the time it was calling

A short walk in the valley tonight we saw redstart tree pipet ,treecreeper ,red grouse and heard curlew and cuckoo we were only there an hour ,but nice and peacefull after the crowds had gone

A long walk today in the valley ,great day whether and birds 4 common sands 3 grey wagtails 2 redstarts 2 curlews 2 cuckoos and 2 spotted flycatchers and 2 buzzards

Out at errwood friday there was lots of common sandpiper movement over the water, i heard 2 different cuckoos early morning 2 buzzards were s0aring in the afternoon thermals and plenty of bird song coming from the thickening foilage ,most interesting to me after not seeing any on the last 2 trips in the valley was 5 ravens flying over <mybe a family group> croncking as they went

A long walk in the valley today ,but more of a walk than a bird watching trip ,did see 2 family groups of red grouse a stone chat on berry clough A spotted fly was nice in the upper valley on to errwood lots of candas with gooslings and an oyster catcher with them was a suprize ,still common sands calling and flying about managed a snap of 1 on ferilee res,lots of birds with chicks ,forgot to mention cuckoo still calling in upper valley

An early morning drive to the valley this morning and on to dane bollow via derbyshire bridge turned up a few decent birds ,2 great spotted woodpeckers ,lots of curlew 2 kestrals 1 buzzard 1 stonechat 2 wheatears ,2 common sands a raven lots of red grouse including chicks and 1 redstart and 2 pied flycatchers m and f and a red deer

we could have these stunning birds breeding in the goyt again if they were left alone
