A Golden Orb Weaver spider ate a Chestnut-breasted Mannikin after it was caught in its web in Queensland, Australia.

I found this interesting, especially as it is an unusual occurrence.

In Borneo, there are 'bird-eating spiders' with tough webs. Somewhere I have a picture from Brunei of one of these arachnids. Its legs from front to rear were more than the length of my hand. Normally, they catch large insects - some of the butterflies were huge - but the adhesive on the web was strong enough to entrap a flowerpecker, which I saw once. Presumably the spider's bite is powerful enough to break the skin of a bird. I've seen it reported since that there are no spiders that trap birds, but obviously the flowerpecker I saw had been reading the wrong stuff.

I know that the Huntsman spider in Oz can bit through human skin, but it isn't as poisonous as other creaures to humans.
