Foxes and eggs (2 Viewers)

This is a regular forum question. What buried an egg in my border/plant pot/lawn? Generally the answer is 'a fox'. I've photographed foxes picking up eggs a number of times, but rarely have seen them consume the object of their desire. Tonight though, sorting through some pictures from July I came across a sequence I'd forgotten about: a young fox eating an egg.

A trail of feathers and uneaten eggs at a pheasant or partridge nest is usually fox work. They don't seem to like eggs much and in my experience don't return after they've eaten the hen. Hedgehogs and badgers however really like eggs and consume them immediately.

Well true, if they can get the hen they'll leave the eggs. That's true enough, and there's only so much they can carry away. Depends on the state of the feather here whether it's a fox or a raptor. Foxes break the feathers, raptors pluck them.

But in English town gardens, foxes get lots of eggs and bury them! They also climb trees to find them.
