First three birds you expect to see in 2016 (1 Viewer)

I didn't make any predictions, but when I stepped onto my back porch this morning my first three birds of 2016 were House Sparrow, House Finch, and White-crowned Sparrow, with Northern Mockingbird appearing immediately after those three.

Here in Manhattan, the usual suspects are:
House Sparrow,
European Starling,
Feral Pigeon.

Herring and Ring Billed Gulls are potential spoilers, they fly high where they are easily seen.

The Pigeon sweeps the pool, more than 40 seen before a lone House Sparrow flew by. Herring Gull was third, no Starlings until much later in the morning.

First I expect to hear in half-light before dawn on 1st: Robin, Blackbird, Wren.

First I'm likely to actually see: Blackbird, Woodpigeon, Magpie.

If I'm lucky, Tawny Owl could get in as #1 heard.

Actual; heard:
1 Robin
2 Tawny Owl
3 Blackbird

Actual; seen:
1 Wren
2 Blackbird
3 Mallard

Last few years, House Sparrow – and Starling – have come in between ##30-40 on my yearlist. A sad sign of the times :-C

House Sparrow - #33
Starling - #54

What I expected to see was:

1) Noisy Miner
2) Sulphur Crested Cockatoo
3) Rainbow Lorikeet

What actually saw was close, but with an unusually prominent kookaburra sneaking in at 3rd before the rainbow lorikeets (4th). (Note: the kookaburra sat on a TV antenna, rather than an old gum tree, which is what made her easy to see).

At first light at home I guess;

Sardinian Warbler
Common Chiffchaff
Azure-winged Magpie

Got mine mostly wrong - and not at first light...hic B :)

From my terrace, 1st 12 species in about 20 mins around 11am:
Black Redstart
Common Chiffchaff
Yellow-legged Gull
Gannet
Blackbird
House Sparrow
Collared Dove
Goldfinch
White Wagtail
Meadow Pipit
Serin
Azure-winged Magpie
...and no Sardinian Warbler which was supposed to be the 1st.:-O

This morning at 8am first 3 were:
Azure-winged Magpie
Spotless Starling
Sardinian Warbler (eventually!)

For some reason I can't edit this post?

Anyway, two birds up (heard) for 2016: Moorhen and Woodpigeon - the latter crashing out of roost wing-clapping but utterly distinctive. Neither on my guess list. Going to bed now as up again 0430.....

Happy New Year!

John

The third bird was a Tawny Owl (one out of three ain't bad) and I actually saw it, spotting it on top of a telegraph pole on the way to Beckley Forest - where several more were shouting at each other.

I didn't go birding yesterday but I managed to see 18 species so far, including Great White Egret and Middle Spotted Woodpecker (heard only). The first 3 were :
1.Robin
2.Blackbird
3.Woodpigeon

Most likely:

American Crow
House Sparrow
Ring-billed Gull

Unless I'm out of town at first light.

What I actually got:

1. House Sparrow
2. White-breasted Nuthatch
3. Red-tailed Hawk

I slept through the mass exodus of American Crows from their nightly roost, and it was snowing too hard as I left the city to see any Ring-billed Gulls.

Robin - heard
Blackbird - heard
Blue Tit - heard

Left the house at 6am to go birding, so still dark. First three actually seen would be feral pigeon, herring gull and carrion crow.

Carrion Crow
House Sparrow
Black bird

I had predicted owls - was out during the night...

Now the 3rd and I can only add Red Kite to the list.
