Europe's Birds: An Identification Guide (1 Viewer)

I've been loyal to Wildsounds for years, Duncan and his partner Peter are nice blokes but on fairly cheap purchases which don't qualify for free postage, I often find better deals. Postage can add 20-25% to the cost of cheaper books, especially if you use NHBS.

Mine is imminent according to the PO who insist on texting me every five minutes.
Me too. I don't know Peter but I always find Duncan most helpful and considerate. I'm relaxed about occasionally paying a little more to keep a specialist book service going. It's on order from them so should hopefully arrive soon ....

Well, in my old age and understanding my book fetish, two of the same book arrived today!

Obviously, I buy a lot of books and at some point, I've ordered this a second time, not remembering the first! Rather than send one back, it will be convenient for me to keep one here and take one to Cyprus.

Yes now I have all three! Here a few comparison photos of BB and EB together. All in all EB is fantastic with some great improvements to BB! I'm so glad they changed the main photo of the Tawny Owl as the one in BB always kind of annoyed me 🙈

A very comprehensive section on vagrants too which I wonder, if they've stretched the bounds of Europe to include the Western Palearctic e.g where have Diederic Cuckoo, Black-crowned Tchagra, Plumbeous Water Redstart and a few other species in this section, turned up in Europe? Also wonder why they didn't keep each, with it's own family in the main section?

Ther's a very useful section too on 'estsblished introductions', many of which, birders now count on their lists.

This is one of the reasons I long to get back to Europe.

What an exciting new guide! As stated up the page, a book of this nature would not have readily competed with your more standard ID guides until quite recently; but photos these days are often of such superb quality, that this could really become the future of bird guides.

At the moment, ordering anything into Australia is a massive pain due to Covid restrictions at Australia Post. I was hoping to order and peruse this guide before moving home, but it's looking like I may have wait just that little bit longer.

And yes... Europe-wide travel can't be far away.

Can someone answer this for me?

I refer to Europe specifically rather than the WP as this is the title of the book.

Tarsiger.com is your best friend as always. Plumbeous Water Redstart - on Crimean peninsula, Black-crowned Tchagra - Spain, Diederic Cuckoo - Cyprus (+ Israel and Lebanon but that's outside of their use of 'Europe'?). Not sure how widely accepted these records are but at least they are out there.

There's a review on my blog. A weighty book but will anyone own up to not buying?

You give a cautionary note that the book follows HBW/Birdlife taxonomy, rather than IOC. How much does this effect the species recognized out of curiosity? I would assume that Europe is a bit more settled as far as taxonomy than say Africa or South America, so I wouldn't think their are radical differences between IOC and Birdlife?

Many thanks for this.

Can those who have a copy stop posting comments as my copy isn't due to arrive for a week (the official publication date I gather) and it's damn irritating not to see for myself! The thrush plate looks a little disappointing compared to that in BB as it shows fewer images but from what I've seen elsewhere I guess there's a comparative thrushes-in-flight plate. The Ruff plate too is, in my view, inferior to that in BB but that's the price you pay for squeezing so many extra species into a limited space.

Did I mention that I have two and have had for about a week now......;) Where have you ordered from?

As a traditionalist, I've never been a fan of photo guides but this series is way in advance of anything that has gone before, especially the dragonfly titles.

A tweet from the publishers tells me that the publication date is next week (Thursday I think) so whoever you got it from is being rather naughty! As usual, I've got mine on order from WildSounds.
