Endangered Birds from Mindoro, Philippines (1 Viewer)

New member
Hello to all,

I have joined this forum in the hope of finding more information and/or assistance re endangered species in the island of Mindoro in the Philippines. Specifically I am looking for information, photos and/or illustrtations of the Mindoro Imperial Pigeon, The Philippine Cockatoo, The Mindoro Hornbill, the Mindoro Sacred ( Bleeding ) Heart Pigeon, the Mindoro Blue Napped Parrot and the Philippine Hawk Eagle.

I have property at around 1800 feet at the edge of the Rainforest above Puerto Galera, in the North of Mindoro, and would like to start a breed and release program in the furture. The same people who have been trapping the birds and selling them or killing them could be encouraged to assist in such a program. The first step is for me to do my research and find out if these birds are sighted and where and just how often. Drawings or photographs would be a big help.I have only been able to find a few and the files are much to small to be of any help.

My property is adjacent a small 9-hole golf course and several of neighbours share similar interests. We are gradually encouraging the birds to return and have been lucky enough to have a pair of Serpent Eagles take up residence and breed. So far we have been able to discourage any poaching of same.

Any information or advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Terry Duckham

Tervetuloa to Birdforum, Terry. In BF You can possibly find information from Bird Database (on the red bar on top of this page). From Gallery You can find whole lotta pictures around the world. Remember though that copyright is owned by photographers, which again can be contacted via Private Messages. FAQ & Gallery Guidelines are also good to check.

Hi Terry,

On behalf of Admin and the Moderators, welcome to Bird Forum.

I can't help with the information you seek, but as Karwin says, check out the Australia and Asia forum in the Gallery or since you know the name of the birds you want to research then have a look in the Database on the link above. If you wish to download a photo then please contact the member to request permission.

Sounds like a great project you are embarking upon.

Thank you

Thanks Tim,

Great sites and veery useful. Now I have most of the pics I have to get the local lads to tell me the local names etc... It will be an interesting project. I'll keep you posted.

Hiya Terry

check out the oriental bird club images database - a fantastic resource http://www.orientalbirdimages.org/

Tina McDonald's site where do you want to go birding today has pix of some of those birds http://www.camacdonald.com/birding/asiaphillipines.htm

BirdLife International's website will have a lot of info too in various places on some of those birds you mention.

www.surfbirds.com should have some of those birds i think in the world rarities section

Thanks to all,

A very quick response and very useful sites. I've downloaded the pics and will now see if the local folk can recognise and name ( in the local venacular ) the birds. I'll let you know how it goes.
