Elegant Trogon? Arizona, USA (1 Viewer)

Hey everyone,

I've attached a recording of what Merlin (BirdNET Sound ID) is telling me is an Elegant Trogon.

I'm sharing it here to hopefully get some expert opinions to confirm the ID.

I'm skeptical because research tells me that they're only found in the Atascosas, Chiricahuas, Huachucas, and Santa Ritas Mountains, but this recording is from Ajo, AZ, about 100 miles west of the closest mountain range Elegant Trogons are found.

The recording was made on 1/24/24 around 5am.

What do you think?

Is it even a trogon? Not familiar with the alternatives, but sounds a bit like a fox. Decide by listening to xeno canto recordings (it doesn't sound like the headline ebird ones---which do sound like trogons)

Something I find useful is to look at the sonographs. I find it easier to compare the visual sound signatures against each other.

With that said, having listened to the ebird recordings I don't think this is a match.

Thanks for all the feedback. I do think it's a bird and the raspy, hoarse nature sounds similar to a Trogon, but I agree, the call itself is not a match to what's commonly posted online.

Any ideas on what bird this might be?

For those interested, I've attached a spectrogram of the call.

[Xeno canto is far and away the better source for sound recordings. For one thing you can download them...]
