hi everyone,

im going to dumfries and galloway in august, drummore to be presise. it is only about 3 miles from the mull of galloway or whatever it is called.

Where is a must visit site? try and keep them around drummore could probably stretch to the next peninsula. im going with my grandparents so they will be driving and wont go too far. last time i went there i had just started b'watching so had almost no knowlage, but im better now i think :brains:

thanks Krispo

There is a very good hide at Wigtown, and the town itself is famous for its secondhand bookshops. Might be a good place for the gps to spend a few hours while you are at the hide.

Go for a day out to rspb wood of cree reserve at Newton Stewart, then to Wigtown where there are great bookshops, ospreys on camera and a hide at the harbour overlooking an excellent lagoon.
The Mull of Galloway is an rspb reserve too.
There are numerous areas for birding in the county but can involve a lot of driving,so try the above suggestions as it'll let everyone get something out of the day.
Tom.

At this time of year the wood of cree is alive with birds its an rspb reserve situated by the village of minnigaff details are available on the rspbs website under reserves.

i found it superb for bird watching at this time of year. Another reserve is ken dee marshes situated near the village of laurieston in dumfries and galloway ive had terific views of red kite there it is on the kite trail map. Also there is a farm close by called bellymack farm where they feed the kites get there before two in the afternoon to avoid the crowds .ive stayed in dumfries and galloway many times now and absolutely love it i wish you all the best and good spotting.

Thanks.

We go to Dumfries and Galloway a few times a year. The area is bursting with wildlife and most attractions are well signposted. I would also endorse the Galloway Forest Park, the Red Kites and the coastlines around the Solway Firth. I hope you enjoy it, Dumfries and Galloway really is a beautiful area.

We stayed near Dumfries two years ago first week in June and had a great holiday. RSPB Wood of Cree was about my favourite location as we saw the most species there, plus there's the added attraction of Otter in the small loch nea rthe car park. Mind you other friends who've been have seen next to nothing - so it may depend on the time of year.

The Galloway Forest Park was pretty good as was the forest drive. The Red Kites are fed at a farm near Laurieston which also attracts Buzzard.

Wigtown we visited twice for the Osprey and the hide by the lagoon.

I'm afraid we never made it quite onto the Mull of Galloway - that will have to be another year!

I just got back from Drummore yesterday, stopped on the Caravan Clubs site at New England bay. There are usually a reasonable selection of small waders on the beach there, the inevitable oystercatchers, lots of gannet off the coast quite close in feeding and an abundance of sandwich terns plus the inevitable shags and cormorants. On the New england bay site you will find whitethoat, willow warblers, lots of house sparrows and chaffinches, yellowhammers and linnets. We usually see redstarts there and also twite but for some reason none appeared this time. There is a barn owl that flies along the back fence in the early evening but you have to be very watchful to catch it. There are usually lots of curlew about but none at the moment, plus all the usual suspects in the gulls.
When the wind blows hard ( which it frequently does ) it's worth keeping an eye out for divers which sometimes come into the bay for shelter.
Down on the mull by the foghorn you can see kittiwakes, fulmers, shags, gannets, the occasional puffin ( but not likely in August ) guillemots and razorbills ( in abundance ). At other places on the mull you will see rock pipets, wheatears, sand and house martins, lots of swallows plus stonechats and whin chats. It's always worth keeping your eye open wherever you are down there.
The harbour at Port Patrick ( about 14 miles ) has a resident small colony of Black Guillemots.
I have attached 4 pictures taken last Sunday, nothing special but it gives you a taste.
