Dual Layer DVD-RW Writing/Burning (1 Viewer)

I have a new computer with a dual layer DVD-RW drive. I have some blank DVD-RW disks but when I try to burn files to a disk I get a message to say the the disk is corrupt or that it is damaged. I can burn to the blank disk on another computer which has a multidrive DVD-RW which suggests that the blank disk is OK. The problem computer reads from the DVD drive OK. Do I need to purchase some blank DVD-RW DL (dual layer) disks in order to be able to write or maybe there is a problem with the drive. Any suggestions before I make the trek to the shop where I bought it would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Colin,

Dual Layer drives should be able to burn regular RW DVD media as well as CD's in the usual way. Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious but it is a - (dash) RW drive or +/- (plus/dash) RW drive and not just +RW? If it is the later then the -RW disks will not work. Most drives are multi-format these days but just worth checking.

The other thing is that I think DL disks are only commercially available in + (plus) R format at present (write once) and not +RW and certainly not -RW.

Have you tried burning a regular CD-RW. If that fails then it must either be a drive fault or possible software (driver) problem, the later is unlikely if this is a new pre-installed system.

cheers

Pete

I have a dual layer DVD-RW drive but I only use single layer DVD media (I have never even tried a dual layer disc). Although most blank disc work ok I have had a few makes that gives me problems. Have you tried a different make of DVD-RW?.
I assume that you are not using disc's that have a speed which is not compatable with your drive.

Pete,
Thanks for the pointers. I will double check that it is not a + drive. I will try another type of disk when I can get my hands on one. I am using a DVD-RW with a Packard Bell logo on it because that is what I am using with the laptop which is Packard Bell and that works OK. The machine which is giving problems is a Compaq Presario SR1719 with a dual layer drive in it according to the spec. I thought that I would be able to use 'standard' DVD-RW in a dual layer drive. Didn't know that DVD-RW DL are not available yet.

Roy,
Thanks. Yes, I need to check the speed also. I am learning fast having spent some time surfing to try to suss out the problem. The speed on the disk pack is 1x. I will get into the system info of the computer and check things out.

Pete, Roy,
Thanks for your help. It was very simple, a duff pack of disks. Got a CD-RW as suggested and that worked, so the drive was good. Got a DVD-RW from a different manufacturer and that worked fine as well. The whole computer works now so all is well. Thanks again. :t:
