Do you own a CL Curio 7x21? Must have accessories (1 Viewer)

Okay. You dont use it in your pockets?
I have a pocket in my coat or jacket that is the right size for pocket binoculars, and I don't keep anything else there that could scratch the optics like keys, so I don't need to put the non-existent rainguard or objective covers (or 3D-printed ones) that would slow down the deployment of the binoculars, so I put them directly in the pocket without a case.

In Summer, when I am not wearing a jacket I will use a belt-mounted case, but typically I will also have another one for a compact camera (Ricoh GRIII or GRIIIx), so that can be awkward.

What I don't put do is put pocket binos in my backpack. They are slower to access, and in that case I might as well stow x32 or x42 binos depending on how much other stuff I am carrying that day.

Oh, by the way the Ricoh GC-11 leather belt case for the GRIII/GRIIIx is a perfect fit for the Curio. I can't believe I am only just now discovering this, but I only recently got the Curios (thanks to PatR's tip in the Binocular Bargains thread on 2024-12-31), as apparently also did Harry Stottle, so I haven't summered with them yet.

Not perfectly protective, though, one ocular would be exposed. Ricoh also makes another case, the GC-12, which is more enclosed, but it is more expensive and lacks the belt loop. One word of warning: the stitching on that belt loop is not the most robust, I managed to rip it out while sitting down in my car with the case attached to my belt, so if anyone has recommendations on a more solid nylon case that is not as large as the Swarovski one, I'm all ears.

What do you think about the Curio compared to UV 8x20 and VP 8x25? Still keep them?

They are slightly better than the Ultravid 8x20 BL, mostly in brightness, with slightly larger AFOV and more forgiving eye placement. The Ultravid feel more robust (the plastic underbody of the Curios feels rather flimsy, the Ultravid is all-metal and the leather covering also feels much nicer than the Swarovski rubber). To be frank, I wouldn't have bought the Curios if there hadn't been that exceptional sale PatR pointed to. I am definitely keeping the Ultravids.

The VP 8x25 are better for an eyeglasses wearer, but mine have lost their diopter wheel (I am too lazy to send them in, I will probably wait until next Birdfair). The VP are also much bulkier, in large part due to the misguided single-hinge design.

Oh, the Ultravid hard leather case also fits the Curios, although they rattle inside a bit. I don't think new Ultravids ship with it, though (mine are from 2006).

Thanks
I love my VP 8x25. (Even if i dont wear eyeglasses)

But i considering the Curio as second pocket bino because its more pockeble.

The difference between the Curio and the VP 8x25 is big enough to justify having both you think?

The single hinge of the VP makes it bigger and less pocketalble but much easier to use than a dual hinge dont you think?

I've never had any problems adjusting dual hinges, so no, I don't believe this is the case.

It depends on your finances. I have a binocular acquisition problem, so don't take advice from me.

Going from the 2.5mm eye pupil of the UV to the 3mm of the Curio, comparable to the 3.1mm of the Victory Pocket makes a huge difference in comfort. At the same time, there is a lot of overlap, so I think a x30 or a really compact x32 makes more sense as complement to the Curios. The Zeiss SFL 8x30 are not that complement, I actually prefer the VP 8x25 to the SFL 8x30.

I think a 7x21 and 8x30 would be a good combo indeed

But i already have a NL Pure 8x42 so i dont need another 1000 plus dollar bino. If i need more than 3.1 ER and do serieus viewing i take this one.

I already have the VP 8x25 and i dont want to sell it. But still considering the Curio because it looks so lovely and small ☺️ i cant get it out of my head

I can afford it but i dont really need it

Once again, don’t take advice from someone afflicted with Gear Acquisition Syndrome, but I think the right framework for making a decision is whether you have ever found yourself in the situation where you missed out on a birdwatching opportunity because you didn’t have your VP on you because they were too bulky, whereas you would likely have had the Curios.

If even the Curios would have been too large (suit jacket occasion at the Concertgebouw, for instance), perhaps the right answer is a monocular like the Nikon 5x15 HG or 7x15 HG.
