DIY Eye Shields? (1 Viewer)

I would like to add batwing eye shields to my Monarch 7 8X42. These are the rubber attachments that flip out form the side of the eyecup and sit on your cheek.

I found one 3rd party unit that is priced at $35 on Amazon.ca

But I am sure that with a bit of foam sheeting and some contact cement I could make my own. Has anyone done this or seen examples?

Grant:

Check the ones from Field Optics. They are the Eyeshield that works very well and should
for you.
These do stretch over your eyecups and they flip down.
Good luck, let us know how it goes.

I suppose your next best would be to try a bicycle innertube, and cut and fit to your liking.

The reason I mentioned the Field Optics ones, is I have them and use them.
You will not be able to fashion anything close, to how well these work.

I agree with Jerry. I've bought all kinds and made my own from innertubes. The Field Optics Research are the best I've found, worth the money provided they fit your binocular.

Grant,

I have made my own with, as you mention, black foam sheet, about 1/16" thick. I cut a piece wide enough to wrap halfway around the eyepiece, rectangular at the bottom and with a semicircular light shield to stick up and out. I used black tape around the eyepiece to attach it. If stretched a bit upon installation, the stresses within the material make the light shield flare outward just about right, worked great for an astro binocular. In extreme cold, it traps eye moisture and hastens fogging.

It looks terrific, I might add, women will be all over you.

Thanks Ronh.

I am going to give this a try. I was thinking of contact cement but black electrical tape might work better. I have a binoviewer for astronomical viewing that could benefit from bat wings as well.

And I just don't need any more women fawning over me.

I had overlooked the combo pack. That makes the price more palatable.

Thanks, Grant

there is a vendor at Amazon with the single sets for $15, too, for folks who don't wasn't to have lots of these. I also saw the 35 buck price, and was surprised. usually they do a decent job of showing pricing, but not in this case.

I like the shields a lot, BTW.
