Croatian Night Bird (1 Viewer)

Hi, Have just returned from holiday in Croatia. Every night we heard a bird(s) which made a sort of 'beep' sound. There were maybe two birds calling. We asked hotel Rep and Staff and they didn't know!! Thought it was what they called a Chook?? (not a chicken) but they didn't know of English translation/equivalent. Any ideas please. Many thanks

Sounds most like a description of a Scops Owl to me. Have a listen here

If it wasn't a Scops Owl Midwife toads do make a very high pitched beeping noise as well.

I'd go with Scops Owl too, probably too late in the season for the amphibians to be calling.

I stayed for a week in May at Porec in northern Croatia in the 80,s and the Scops owls were very vocal right outside the hotel.

We were in Porec. So the owls are still there which is good news. Thanks
