I can remember in the 1990's when Smew were an easy tick in Cheshire with regular wintering birds at IMF (a pair), Frodsham (up to four redheads) plus other records from Tatton/Rostherne and the south cheshire Meres. In the last few years they have become much harder to see. This is the third winter for the redhead at Tatton.

Sorry. Just cleared some space. Will post an update tomorrow when i've been to look for it in the morning and send you a PM.

I put the news out this afternoon. Before that it hadn't been reported so don't wait on news. I reckon it should still be there but if it isn't try Rostherne.

i'm sure there will be updates here its always nice to have a smew in cheshire , failing that its been on birdguides the last 2 days mate

The problem is I might read an update here tonight but it may have gone tomorrow morning. If it is around Sunday afternoon then I will go to see it and the Wodcock at Risley Moss. I would want to know on that day if it is still there.

Did nt you go to see one at Wintersett?

I have never seen Smew before. I went to Leighton Moss in December ad it was no there that day. There is one at Pine Lake. A Smew has also visited Marton Mere and Martin Mere over the last month.

plus ive never seen a red-head smew only drakes at wintersett

Tatton Park

Good views of the Smew on Tatton Mere at lunchtime. Parallel to the Smews location, over in the Beech stands by the golf course, there were several dozen Brambling and a brief glimpse of a Woodcock.
