Cardboard nest box from poundland! (1 Viewer)

well, although I'm very dubious, when I saw a cardboard (and apparently water-resistant ) bird box in pound land, I couldn't resist giving it a go. It certainly looks sweet, but time will tell if its up to the job. I have a wooden rspb standard nest box up too, and that has a camera in. wouldn't it just be typical if they nested in the cardboard box and not the posh wooden one with the camera in?

anyway, I'll be posting on here if the box gets visitors. obviously if it works, it will be a very cheap and easy way of helping the birds.
let's see shall we! :t:

oh and heres a pic of the box ; http://tinyurl.com/69kr62m

Just watch out for Grey Sqirrells, if it's cardboard they will be inside it in no time.

Wouldn't this make it easier for woodpeckers to breach and grab the eggs? It doesn't look very sturdy nor does it look very heavy. A gush of wind and your gonna have a birdbox heading for australia

well it's an experiment! I've never seen a woodpecker in the area so that shouldn't be any trouble. My guess is that if anything it will only be used for roosting.

This is just a personal opinion but I can't help thinking that this is a bad idea.
Yes, birds might nest in it but they will not be protected from rain, wind, squirrels, magpies, woodpeckers and all sorts of other dangers. 'An experiment'? So you wouldn't mind having a whole brood of birds dying of coldness, being eaten by other animals or the box falling apart completely just because it's an 'experiment'?

I'd personally stick to good quality RSPB nestboxes as I want to encourage birds to safely nest in my garden and I don't want to invite them to an unsafe nestbox.

Can it affix to a wall? What stops it being blown over/away in a high wind? Looks cute, but I cannot see it being very substantial or safe.
