Hi,

I have a Velbon Sherpa tripod - the one sold by In focus. Can I use a Manfroto 128RC or 701RC head on it?

Cheers

you can - I do - A Velbon Camargue CF530 (I think that's the number) with the 701RC head. I did need to get a thread adaptor to conver the Velbon thread to whatever size the Manfrotto takes but that was pennies and should be available from any decent camera shop. I had more trouble keeping the head locked on as there are no securing screws on the Velbon unlike on Manfrotto legs. In the end a additional washer and a coating of SuperGlue seems to have done the trick. Not sure I'll ever be able to get the head off, but then as I have plans so to do, I'm not especially bothered...

Does anybody know the size of the thread adapter needed to attach a Manfrotto 700 RC2 head to a Velbon Sherpa Pro CF-530 tripod?

Thanks in advance,

Bill.

Bill,

Most screws on tripods are either 3/8-16 UNC or 1/4-20 UNC. The Manfrotto heads mount with a 3/8-16 thread. The Velbon most likely has a 1/4-20 thread. If it is a 1/4-20 it is probably the same size as the camera attachment screw, although some semi-pro and pro models use a 3/8-16.

Edit: I just looked at my Manfrotto catalog, it looks like their 088LBP will adapt your 1/4-20 male thread to the 3/8-16 female thread of the Manfrotto head. It appears to have a washer built into it which may aid you in keeping it tight.

Things might be different with your specific model (or UK or older models?), but I have a fairly new Velbon El Carmagne CF630 tripod, and it did not require any adapter at all to fit the 700 RC2 head on top of it. I do not remember exactly how it works, but the top of the tripod has a reversible screw (or plate?). Each end of the screw is a different size, so you can unscrew it and flip it to match the size needed by your tripod head. I was also able to fit the 701 RC2 on the tripod with no problems.

Hope this helps,
Jim

I have the same problem. I bought a Velbon Sherpa Pro CF-640 and a Mafrotto 128RC head (for a ATS 80 HD). I missed also the hole for the securing screw in the Velbon base plate. I will use LoctiteTM to secure the main screw, this should work. The blue Loctite can be even released again without brute force.
