I love this combination... This eye piece REALLY transformed this scope! Look at that BIG PHAT OCULAR!!! Color Fidelity is awesome, it has great resolution...and is super bright during daylight hours... MINIMAL CA..some flaring while looking at the moon. I don't think this is a true 20x in this scope, though... Maybe 18x? It has a SUPER wide field of view, ans it has eye relief for days... IMG_2022-04-14-09-32-23-393.jpgimage.jpgimage.jpg

I know this is an old thread and that the pool of people still interested in this scope is probably very small, but, encouraged by Ownthenight's posts, I have been trying to fit a Vixen GLH20D to my own ancient Spacemaster II, so far without success, and I am hoping someone here might have some experience to share.

I have the old Bushnell zoom eyepiece, which is dismal, and an 'ME15' bought cheaply from Action Optics in the UK some years ago. It gives a rather soft image and only a narrow view, so I wanted to give the scope, which must be 40 years old, one last chance.

I saw the GLH20D eyepiece on offer for 120 euros here in Germany and ordered it along with a Vixen GL25 wide, thinking one of them might work. The GL25 fits in the female mount, but had an out of focus spot in the centre, maybe because it protruded too far/not far enough into the scope body. The GLH20D was far too big for the male mount, which suggests that Ownthenight has a different version with a bigger mount. But hand-held, the GLH20D gave a great view and focused past infinity.

I have established that the male thread on my scope is M35x1mm. After measuring the GLH20D myself, I got hold of M35x1 to M42x0.75 and M42x1 adapters, but no joy. So I emailed Vixen, who said the eyepiece needs a mount with a M41.5x1 thread.

So: does anyone know where I can find an M35x1 to M41.5x1 adapter for a reasonable price? I think it would cost about 100 euros to get one custom-made here in Germany. That plus the eyepiece (130 euros) feels like too much money for what is still going to be a fairly weak setup for birding.

I am reluctant to consign the Spacemaster to retirement at an archery club or something similarly undemanding. But unless I can upgrade it at low cost, I think I would be better off putting the cash towards something like a used Nikon ED III or Opticron MM3/4.

Grateful for any tips.

You could probably 3D print an adaptor ring to slightly larger dimensions e.g. 35.5 to 42 and the threads on the scope and eyepiece would 'bite' into it to keep it in place.

I made a model on Tinkercad and priced up a print on i.materialise (who are very expensive for one off items) and the cost including delivery is around €60 for a 5mm thick ring. I'm sure you could find a cheaper service.

A thick rubber O-ring may offer a similar and very cheap solution.

Our external threaded eyepieces are 35x1.1 and would fit on the version of the scope you have:

But no guarantee of reaching infinity focus without testing :-(

We also have an adapter ring that would probably allow the GL25 to reach infinity (part code 40927S) but getting one to Germany would be prohibitively expensive!

Sorry for the sort of good and sort of bad news!

Thank you very much Pete for this very helpful information. I didn't know that 3D printing had become so accessible. I think I will take a path of lesser resistance, though.

I just had a rather confused email exchange with one of your colleagues on the same subject and I think your input makes clear what he was trying to tell me: that the 40831 eyepiece might fit straight onto the scope's existing M35x1 mount without any need for an adapter. Please correct me if this is wrong and I am still wandering aimlessly around the minefield that is scope-eyepiece compatibility!

The 40831 eyepiece is listed on the website of optik-pro in Germany as deliverable in 1-2 weeks. If that doesn't pan out, I or a relative are in UK often enough to pick one up there (for a better price).

If I am not happy with the result on the old scope, I can execute Plan B to get an Opticron MM3/4 60 and use the eyepiece with that.

Thanks again!
