Budget Eden 8x42 HD remarkable quality (1 Viewer)

Hi,

I tested an Eden 8x42 binocular, available via webshops in Europe for 149 Euro, and found it of remarkable quality.
See the review section.

Renze,

Thank you for the review. The binoculars certainly seem to perform well above their price point. Your comments remind me very much of some of the same ones that surround some of the lower price Zen Ray models.

On a related note, that link you provided to another review of the same brand of binoculars but with the ED glass.....that same unit is being sold under the Zhumell name now in the US. I have only see one review of it but it was very favorable. I do believe someone compared them with some other inexpensive ED models and actually chose the Zhumell over the others.

Beware of the Eden Quality ED 8x42!

I had one ( see Renze's link to my thread ), but the diopter adjustment ring went berzerk in less than a week! It's plastic, situated just behind the focusing wheel, and has clickstops and a little notch to adjust.
When I was out birding with the bin, I suddenly noticed that the close focus had improved all by itself, from 3.5m to less than 2 m!
Strange, I thought. Then I couldn't get trees at 300 yards sharp in focus, the focus wheel just banged at the infinity edge and anything over 200 yards was blurred.
I noticed that the diopter ring was the culprit, wandering freely, never to be able to be adjusted properly again! Rubbish build quality!

After I experienced a similar mishap with the Zeiss 7x42 FL's diopter adjustment ring that went berzek after a while, I swore never ever to buy a binocular with a combined focus wheel/diopter adjustment on the central hinge. What did I do? I bought the Eden Quality 8x42 ED sight-unseen from the internet! What was I thinking?!

After TWO faulty diopter adjustment designs I will steer clear from ANY diopter design placed on the central hinge, in combination with the focus wheel. I will exclusively buy binoculars with a separated focus wheel and diopter adjustment on the ocular, from now on.

That said, the Eden HD on the other hand, has the diopter on the right ocular, so this is OK and to be cheered very loudly!

Best regards,

Ronald

I feel I have to set things straight on the Eden Quality; I bashed the ED 8x42 in my above post, but I did the same on the review page of the company's own website. My review was the only negative one among 32 reviews of the ED 8x42.

I threw the bins away, though the company explicitly stated I would have gotten an immediate refund if I had sent them back.
I didn't bother, and forgot about it, until recently the company sent me a mail with the question if I wanted to try out the new Eden Quality XP series? It surprised me that they hadn't forgotten about me, and after checking out the specs of these new binocular line in 8x42 and 10x42 I decided to order a pair of 8x42's.

They arrived promptly. I've had them for just a little over a week, and I intend to post my impressions of them soon as a separate thread.

I'd like to say, that the service of the company has been exemplary.

Best regards,

Ronald

Frank,

I'm not surprised that the Zhumell was chosen over the others, if they're the same as the Eden Quality ED. The optical performance is really good.

That said, a new XP line of Eden Quality has been released, and to my surprise the XP is better than the ED, optically, IMO. I've put the Eden Quality 8x42 XP up to Zeiss 7x42 FL, Leica Trinovid 8x42 BA and Zeiss Victory mark I 8x40 to compare.

I will soon post my findings, or better, my impressions of them in a separate thread. I'm not much of a reviewer, in the technical sense, so I have to be well prepared to appear before a critical audience.

Best regards,

Ronald
