Boavista, Cape Verde, November 5th-12th (1 Viewer)

Just returned from a trip to Boavista ,which I can recommend for some winter sun with ( a few ) interesting birds to see.
This was not really a trip targetting birds ( I was with the wife,for a start !) but it's easy to see what's there just by pootling about for a few walks within a mile or two of the resort.
We stayed at the Riu Karamboa ( Thomson package hol) which was a very comfortable and enjoyable all-inclusive hotel. Around the hotel, the habitat inland is dunes and desert -like scrub with some greener areas of bushes.There is a brackish lagoon (river outlet) about 400 yards north along the beach,which was ok for waders.
Birds seen along the beach and at the lagoon;
Brown booby - up to 5 at a time, on and off every day,
Kentish plover
Ringed plover
Turnstone
Greenshank
Grey plover
Whimbrel
Sanderling
Osprey
Little tern- 2 birds ,single day
Sandwich tern - 1 bird
Little egret
Grey heron

Around the hotel;
Spanish sparrow and Iago sparrows in abundance
Brown-necked raven - 2 birds on and off , most days

Inland within a mile of the hotel;
Spectacled warbler - most days, several birds
Black-crowned sparrow-lark , many ,birds singing in flight
Bar-tailed desert lark, singing birds seen every day
Alexander's kestrel - seen only 3 times
Both sparrows much in evidence here too, plus occasional brown-necked ravens.

I took a taxi one day to north of the local town, Sal rei to view the cliffs at Vigla where red-billed tropicbird breeds and saw 2 birds.
I also did a longer walk on the last day ,having so far failed on hoopoe lark ! I walked to the airport and then south and up onto the nearby ridge which put me into a more stony desert habitat (about a 3 mile walk) where I immediately connected with a singing/displaying hoopoe lark.On the way there ,near the end of the runway,an Alexander's kestrel gave very good views.

So, I basically saw all my target birds, and I can recommend Boavista if you are looking for winter sun with a non-birding partner, but with the chance of some easy birding and interesting species.

Sounds great, without inference,may I ask if it was safe to bird all areas you went to?

Just the sort of holiday I enjoy.Thanks for the report.
What did you think of the hotel?What are the AI facilities like.
You may enjoy a holiday in Dahab[look at Dahab Vacation in this forum section].The Happy Life pleases most folk and my wife felt relaxed there whilst I went off birding.
A lot more birds than I anticipated
The best area was Dahab sewage works.Most of the hotels have free shuttle buses dropping you off just near.
Even better- The Dona Sylvia in Goa, the Sheraton in Gambia and the Ottoman Residence in Akyaka Turkey.All easily accessed through package holidays.
Some excellent easy birdwatching in all these places.

Wolfbirder, was perfectly safe walking about. Locals were friendly and was even offered a lift a couple of times. I took the precaution of carrying little cash and used my old binos but didn't seem necessary.
Pratincol, the hotel was good.I spent the majority of my time lazing around the hotel and birdied early and late in the day.

Were the Brown Booby passing offshore?

Have seen a previous trip report highlighting the wader site, I guess it could turn something up if you were fortunate.

Stephen

Stephen, the boobies were fishing offshore. Some breed on an island that's about 2 miles up the coast.

Forgot to mention that there were quail singing all over the place - but never saw one !

Nope, no swifts. Don't think Cape Verde swift is often seen on Boavista ? Most striking absence was gulls. Saw 3 terns but not a single gull.must be the only place I've ever visited without seeing one.

That sounds like a great trip. Cape Verde Islands are on my list of places to visit.

Although sometimes reported, Cape Verde Swift doesn't breed on the three eastern islands (nor São Vicente). eg, in March 2006, my wife and I saw them on Santiago and São Nicolau, but not on Boavista, Sal or São Vicente.
